Exit Through the Gift Shop: A Banksy Film (2010)

When I first heard about this film, it was all the rage. Personally, I had never heard of Banksy before this movie came out. Though, it seemed like he was a big deal in the art world - a really big deal. And, this film showed it.

But, this film was not about Banksy at all. And, that was what made it so brilliant.

It was a story about just a normal guy, Thierry Guetta (aka Mr. Brainwash), who wanted to be a filmmaker. And, in his quest - he stumbles upon the underground art world scene, which was both dangerous yet intriguing.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. In a sense, this underground art world scene sparks scene sparks controversy and interest among all art lovers alike. And, that's what I found so interesting).

So, what is so special about Thierry's story? What makes him so interesting to center a film around him and his life? Well, you'll be surprised at the answer - it definitely threw me for a loop.

Basically, this is a story about how an ordinary guy went from rags to riches (basically overnight) in the art world. Now, Thierry didn't really have any experience in the art world.

But, he did have experience (and loved) using a video camera - he was very passionate about shooting video of everything. And, this passion progressed into filming artists in the underground world - big time artists such as Space Invader, Shepard Fairey, and of course - Banksy.

Though as the film progresses, it slowly unfolds into displaying Thierry's quest to be a filmmaker into a new quest - to be an artist. And, this is where the madness begins.

You see, in Thierry's new quest to be an artist - he consulted with Banksy (who seemed to serve as a kind of mentor), who told him he should really start small and build from there.

(Note: In the film, it depicts Banksy as suggesting Thierry enter and hold small art shows to display his work just inviting family and friends to start off . Then, after a few shows he could then build up his reputation and work towards bigger shows).

But, this was not how Thierry operated. He wanted to be big. And, fast.

So, the story continues to show how Thierry became a success overnight. Though, at the expense of almost every single artist he befriended - including Banksy.

(Note: I don't want to ruin it for those who have not seen the film, but I'll just say - it's really one of those things where it seemed he took advantage of these relationships and friendships that he had made).

Personally, I think this film has a very interesting and important message to say about art. And, that is that "Art is really in the eye of the beholder."

In this case, there were many beholders willing to pay top dollar for art by a regular guy who had just become an overnight success. And, all this due to his connections and relationships he had made in the underground art world.

At the end of the film, Banksy makes a very important observation. And, that is - who is the joke really on?

In a sense, I think this film really begs the question - what makes an artist? And, how can an artist's work really be measured? By the amount of money he or she makes? Or, by the popularity of his or her work? Or, both? Or, neither? Who decides?

Overall, I enjoyed this film - it's different. And, it had an interesting yet important message. Even if you do not consider yourself an artist, it's definitely something I find worth looking into.

If you're in the mood for a documentary type of film, I do recommend this one.

Kid In The Front Row Blogathon: My Favorite Childhood Book

(Note: This post has nothing to do with film and/or movies. Though, I felt compelled to participate and share with you my thoughts. Thanks for reading!)

So, I've decided to participate in my film blogging pal's, Kid In The Front Row, latest blogathon "My Favorite Childhood Book."

Now, as part of a participant of the blogathon - I was required to re-read my favorite childhood book and write about it. And, I'm happy to say and share with you - my favorite childhood book is:

Since I have not read the book in a very long time, it was very nostalgic to go back and re-read the story. I remember as a kid, this was my all time favorite book - I took it with me everywhere.

(Note: And, for those interested - my all time favorite game as a child was Monopoly - I took it everywhere with me as well. Though, I was banned from bringing the game to school. Many times my beloved Monopoly game was taken away as I sat in the principal's office awaiting my fate. Unfortunately, the school system I attended did not tolerate teaching kids about money and business - one of my interests even as a kid. As a child, I was an entrepreneur of sorts - I always had an entrepreneurial venture going on).

After re-reading the book recently, it really takes me back and makes me think about why I liked the story so much. As a kid, I remember reading this book over and over again. And, I remember - it really was a book that kept me going even at a young age.

So, what is it about the story that just kept me going? Well, I think it had a lot to do with the way the story was told and how I was able to relate to the "little engine" in the story.

You see, I wasn't the smartest kid in the class. Nor, was I the strongest. Or, the most artistic. I wasn't even the most behaved kid. But, one thing I did have (which many of my teachers remarked about) was my creativity.

Though, in the areas of my academic life - I kind of struggled with my schoolwork. And, I also had a major behavioral problem - I got distracted easily. And, I didn't take to following directions. But, all of my teachers all said that I was a bright kid - I just needed to apply myself.

So, in an effort to teach me that I could do something if I just put my mind to it - I was introduced to my favorite childhood book. And, I kept reading and reading the book over and over again.

Looking back, in a way - I guess I can say the book kind of inspired me. It encouraged me and taught me that one lesson - if I put my mind to it, I can accomplish the task at hand. And, so - the book remains my favorite childhood book even as an adult.

Reading the book again as an adult, I feel the "kid" in me ignite once again. I think as we grow up into adulthood, society tells us that we must be more practical in terms of the choices we make (whether they be personal, career, etc) and the paths that we take.

But, I sometimes I have to wonder - is practicality the best choice? Does choosing the path of "practicality" make one happy?

Even as a kid, I was told over and over again - I always had my head up in the clouds. And, as I grew up - I was taught in school as well as by my parents to be more practical in my choices in life.

Even at an early age, I always enjoyed writing. And, I had some great teachers who really encouraged me to pursue my love for the art of writing.

Though, as I grew up - I was discouraged to pursue my writing by others including my parents who insisted I be more "practical" in my choice of vocation for the future. My parents saw no place for me in the arts - told me there's no money in it and to give up on these silly dreams. They wanted me to do something sensible where I'd make a lot of money.

As I look back, I can honestly say that I do not think I would be happy if I stopped writing. To me, writing is a part of who I am. And, it's hard to change that.

In relating to the story of the "little engine," I can see the "little engine" inside of me just chugging along as I continue to pursue my interest in writing. Just like the story, I may not be the fanciest or the most popular writer. Or, even the best writer. I may not even have a slew of degrees and awards in writing.

But, just like the "little engine" - I still believe in myself that I can write and pursue my interest. And, I continue to write even to this day.

Getting back to the book, I think everyone has a "little engine" inside of them. And, that "little engine" can do wonders with enough belief and determination.

So, I hope this post in sharing with you my favorite childhood book inspires you to rekindle and re-ignite the "little engine" inside of you.

It definitely has for me.

Beyond A Reasonable Doubt (2009)

After I saw this movie, I suddenly got into a Michael Douglas and thriller type of mood. So, I decided to check this film out. I'm glad I did.

Though this movie is fairly recent, I felt an air of nostalgia throughout the film. To be honest, it really felt like an outdated kind of movie - something you would see as a television special 10 years ago or so. Though, I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

Now, the movie starts out a bit kind of slow - it really sets the scene, the overall mood, and introduces the characters. As the film progresses, it does get a bit interesting.

I don't want to ruin it for those who have not seen the movie, but let me just say - this film is not your average thriller type movie. I found it very interesting how the storyline is set in a way that you feel is predictable.

However, it really isn't as predictable as you think - it really threw me for a loop. And, I guess - that's what made the film enjoyable.

As the movie progresses, the mood and the tone of the story is set in a way that you think you know what will happen. But, just as I thought the film was too predictable - it made a turn, a sharp turn. And, I can tell you - I definitely did not see it coming.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. There was a point in the movie where I thought everything had been settled. But, I did not expect what was yet to come).

This is really a story about how a young man, CJ Nicholas (played by Jesse Metcalfe), and his aspirations in the pursuit of success in his career despite the consequences. And, those consequences came at a high price - his life.

Though, what happens when things go too far? Sometimes we think we have everything all figured out only to be mistaken in the end. And, the ultimate question remains - "Is it worth it?"

To CJ Nicholas, he thought it was worth it. He thought he had the perfect plan to achieve his dream of being a star reporter. The plan seemed flawless. Though, in the end - his actions has consequences. And, those consequences came at a high price.

Without saying too much about the film (as I do not want to spoil it for those who have not seen it), I will say this is a movie that really has a lot of twists and turns. So many times, I thought I had the movie all figured out only to be mistaken - the ending definitely threw me for a loop.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Though the tone seemed a bit outdated, I enjoyed the storyline and the plot very much. Personally, I really enjoy films that are not predictable - movies with surprise endings. And, this one definitely had it.

If you're in the mood for a thriller type film, I do recommend this one.

Indie Film Review: Determinism (2011)

Recently, I just finished watching this film submitted to me by indie filmmakers/directors/writers Sanjit Majumdar and Ranju Majumdar.

I took an interest in their film, "Determinism" when the trailer was submitted here. From the trailer alone, it definitely caught my eye and I knew it would be a movie with something important to say. I was definitely right.

From the very beginning of the film, I could get a sense of the eeriness and setting of the movie - the tone was set quite well. The film takes place in the winter time in Pennsylvania. And, let me just say - the cinematography is just amazing and outstanding. I really could feel the tone throughout the movie.

Now, this is a film that you really do have to pay attention to - it is told quite well. There are bits and pieces of the story that are introduced throughout the movie which really make the film come together at the end.

So, what is this movie about? Well, I don't want to reveal too much as I do not want to ruin it for you. But, I will tell you it's a movie that has some really important themes about our society and how the kids of our society deal with the issues of today.

The main character, Alec (played by Sanjit Majumdar), is a college student who is really struggling with trying to uphold the high expectations of his parents. As many parents who immigrate to this country, there is a lot of pressure placed on their children to do well in school and to uphold a high status position and job after graduating from college. That is the "American Dream" for many parents of their children.

But, Alec is not able to cope and uphold his parents' plans for him. There is just too much pressure. And, in the end - he fails them.

In turn, Alec soon realizes that he is just "tired of trying to fit in." So, he turns to a different life - a life filled with drugs and making easy money. With no support from this family, for Alec - this is his future now. And, so the story begins.

As for the plot, I won't say much as it may ruin it for those who have not yet seen the film. But, I will say - there are a lot of unexpected twists and turns. And, yes - there are a lot of unpredictable moments.

This movie really makes a statement about the future of the children of America. Sometimes parents do place too much pressure on their children to live out their own dreams, not the dreams of their children. But, at what price?

Without having a family and a support system, who else do these kids have to turn to? As parents, when is enough, enough? I understand parents want the best for their children. But, who is to say what is the best? And, what is the definition of success?

In the movie, the "determinism" of the main character, Alec, was to survive on his own to go out and make a fresh start without the support of his family. His will to survive only made him stronger. But, in the end - it was a high price to pay. And, many paid dearly for it.

Overall, I enjoyed the film very much. It was brilliantly executed and had a good storyline. It had my attention throughout. And, I personally think this movie is worthy of being entered into the film festival circuit.

If you're in the mood for a drama and thriller type of film, I do recommend this one.

Disclosure (1994)

Since I was in the mood for a thriller type of movie, I decided to check out this film. It was just what I needed, it did not disappoint.

I enjoy seeing Michael Douglas on the big screen - he has done some great performances and has had many outstanding roles (such as in this movie). And, Demi Moore's performance was exceptional as the antagonist in this film based on the Michael Crighton novel.

Now, I have to warn you - things are a bit outdated in the movie. It's kind of entertaining to watch older films to see how technology has changed over time. Though, there are some ideas in the film based on technology that we still do not have today.

(Note: For those of you who have seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about).

To be honest, there are a lot of twists and turns in the film. During some points, I thought I knew what was going to happen only to be surprised by the turn of events - there were moments that definitely threw me for a loop. And, it made for a worthwhile experience.

In a sense, this film kind of reminded me of this movie. It was similar in a way, both films touched on the theme of technology and how technology can both helps us and hurt us. I guess, what matters is how you intend to use it.

We all like to believe that technology is there to help us. But, if used the wrong way - it can harm us. And, in this day and age - technology can be available to most anyone. If in the wrong hands, technology can lead to destruction.

If you're in the mood for a thriller type of film (as well as enjoy the topic of technology), I do recommend this one.

Tron: Legacy (2010)

When I first saw the trailer to this film, it looked like an interesting movie with a neat concept. Though, it really looked like it would cater more to the fans of the first one. I was right.

Going into the film, I had no background about the original movie - I've never seen it. Though, I knew it existed as well as the video game. So, I was pretty much going into the film blindly - not a good idea.

From the very start, I was a bit lost with the storyline and the characters. Though I was not completely lost, I found it kind of hard to follow and put the pieces together without having seen the first movie.

Many times there were references to the first film shifting from the past to the present and back again. Since I am unfamiliar with the original story, it was a bit difficult for me to comprehend some of the concepts and ideas in the movie.

Though, I think there were some neat things about the film. To me, it felt very much like I was watching a movie in the past. It really felt very "80s like" and retro looking. But, I think they wanted to make it that way for the fans of the original.

Also, there were some pretty neat special effects in the "electronic world." I especially enjoyed the visuals with the action scenes - they were done very uniquely to the film. And, I think the soundtrack was done very well to match the overall feeling of the movie.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. I thought the music soundtrack catered quite well especially to the action scenes).

As for the storyline, I felt a bit lost. Though, it's probably because I have not seen the original film. This is definitely one movie where it's important to see the first one beforehand.

If I had seen the first movie and had been more familiar with the concepts and ideas introduced in the original, it may have been easier for me to follow. Though, I do think it was really neat that the movie touched upon the concept of artificial intelligence.

(Note: I don't want to ruin it for those who have not seen the film, but let's just say the concept and ideas are a bit similar to this movie).

Overall, I really think this film was made for the fans of the original. If you are a fan of the original movie, you will probably understand this film better than most people.

For those who have not seen the original, it's best to see the first one beforehand. And, in my opinion (unless you are a fan of the original and really feel the need to see it) - wait for the DVD.

A Christmas Story (1983)

It's that time of the year again, Christmas - one of my favorite times of the year. And, in celebration I want to share with you one of my all time favorite Christmas movies - "A Christmas Story."

Ever since I was a little kid, I've always enjoyed this movie. In fact, I watch it every year during Christmas. I guess, it's kind of an annual movie tradition!

Every year when I watch this film, it really brings back the "kid" in me. In a way, I feel this movie is geared towards reminding people of what it's like growing up as a kid during the Christmas season.

With each scene, it really reminds me of the Christmas traditions I went through every year growing up. In the movie, we see the family outing to choose a Christmas tree, the annual Christmas parade, and of course - the anticipated wait and visit to see Santa Claus.

Now, the main theme of the movie centers around the age old question - "What do you want for Christmas?" And, we see this theme consistently portrayed throughout the whole film.

For each of the main characters, what they want for Christmas is different. For Ralphie (played by Peter Billingsley), what he wants for Christmas is what most kids want for Christmas - that special toy we've all had our eyes on.

To me, this movie is really about hope and our anticipation for that special day we all call "Christmas." There are times when things don't go exactly as planned. And, we just have to learn how to cope.

Though Christmas did not exactly turn out the way it was planned, it's these experiences that make for the most memorable moments. Though, in the end it just goes to show - sometimes your wishes do come true. And, that is the magic of Christmas.

If you're in the mood for a Christmas type movie this holiday season, I highly recommend this film.

Black Swan (2010)

When I first saw the trailer for this film, it looked like a very interesting yet typical drama type of movie. Though, after seeing the film - there was nothing typical about it at all.

Going into the movie, I tried very hard not to read the reviews. Though I do try to read reviews for the majority of films I plan on seeing, there are some that I prefer to go in "cold turkey" - this was one of them.

(Note: I really enjoy the element of "surprise" for films that really interest me. For me personally, I guess I enjoy this part of the movie going experience).

At first, I thought I had this movie all figured out. From the trailer, I thought I knew what the story was going to be all about. I was wrong. It wasn't what I expected at all. But, in a good way.

Natalie Portman plays the main character, Nina Sayers, an aspiring dancer and ballerina. She is filled with hopes and dreams of someday becoming a famous and great ballerina dancer. And, she worked hard at her craft.

Now, I'm going to be honest here. This is a movie where it's really important to pay attention. It's one of those films where if you miss certain details - they can be vital to the story. It's one of those kinds of movies.

In the beginning, I will admit - it was a bit slow. But, this was important to the story helping to set the tone for the movie. The characters were introduced, the story was set.

As the audience, I felt that I knew what kind of film this was going to be. There were a lot of anticipated moments yet to my surprise - the movie took a dramatic turn.

It was not the movie that I had expected. The characters in the film seemed so predictable. As it turns out, they were not what I had expected at all.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. I'm trying not to reveal too much because I just don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie yet).

This is really a film about perspective. And, the way we perceive things. Sometimes we may not see things the way others see them. Sometimes we see what we believe. Though, it may not be what others see at all.

As the audience, I felt there were certain parts (as well as characters) in the movie that I had figured out and believed to be true. This is what I saw. As the film progressed, I soon realized this was not the case at all.

This is really a different kind of movie, a unique kind of movie. And, I can honestly say - it wasn't what I expected at all. From the trailer, I was really prepared for a typical, drama type of movie. After seeing the film, it wasn't predictable - it really threw me for a loop.

So many times, I thought I had the film figured out - it really had a lot of twists and turns. There were times where I thought I knew the characters and the storyline only to be surprised by the turn in events.

For me personally, it truly was a very entertaining and unpredictable movie. I enjoyed it very much. It is definitely a movie that I will be watching again.

If you've seen the trailer for this film and it looks even a bit interesting to you, I highly recommend seeing this movie without reading too many reviews.

Murder By Numbers (2002)

"Let the mind games begin."

- Murder By Numbers

Recently, I re-visited this movie. Since I was in a crime movie kind of mood, I decided to check it out again.

Here Sandra Bullock plays a detective type of role. And, I must say - I do enjoy seeing her play these "tough" girl type of roles (such as in this movie).

This film is great in the way of it's execution and portrayal of an idea to perform and get away with the perfect murder. The way the clues and the evidence presented seemed to lead the detectives on the case in a certain direction - an obvious direction. Though, the real story of the crime was slowly and brilliantly revealed as the film progressed.

What I enjoyed about this film was the way it was presented. In parts it was subtle. And, in others - it was captivating. It had my attention throughout.

I especially enjoyed the exploration of the characters in the story. This was not a one sided movie - it had several sides to it. And, it revealed the complexities of human nature by the portrayal of the characters involved.

The movie was not predictable at all. While watching the film, I thought I had it figured out (just like Sandra Bullock's character). But, I was definitely surprised at the turn in events as the film progressed. There were many twists and turns - the suspense definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.

(Note: For those who have seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about).

I guess one thing I did learn from the movie was that anything can happen. We always think crimes happen from those who are unknown to us, people we do not know. But, in reality - crimes can happen closer to home.

As for the end, I think it was brilliant in its execution. There was a part where I thought the movie had ended, where I thought the crime was solved. But, there was a twist - a small piece of evidence that revealed the truth about the crime.

It showed what had really happened from a different perspective, not the perspective we had been exposed to as the audience. And, it was interesting to see how the bits and pieces came together. It definitely threw me for a loop and made for a good ending.

If you're in the mood for a crime and thriller type of film, I do recommend this one.

Jonah Hex (2010)

"Revenge gets ugly."

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it looked pretty interesting. Actually, I thought it was going to be one of those unique kind of films. And, I was right.

Going into the movie, it started out with a bang - lots of action, lots of violence. Being a creation of DC Comics, there was a certain "comic book" feel and style to the film as well. To be honest, it had it's own unique style.

(Note: For all the comic book fans out there, you'll notice a few similarities with the storyline of this film compared to this movie. The topic of vengeance seems to be a running theme throughout the film).

As for the storyline, I felt the story itself had potential. Though, there were many parts that were hard to identify with. Maybe if I had been a fan of the comic than maybe it would be easier for me to understand. But, I had not read the comic going into the movie.

Since the movie is more of a western type movie, I think those who have an appreciation for these types of films as well as comics may better receive this one than others.

To be honest, I think this film was written more for the fans and those who understand the comic over the mass public. As someone who is unfamiliar with the comic book story, It was just a bit difficult to understand the film in certain parts.

Though, I do have to give this movie credit for its uniqueness. I think there were some very unique moments in the movie as far as character development. I especially enjoyed Jonah Hex' special powers.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. I don't want to ruin the movie for those who have not seen it. But, let's just say the special powers Jonah Hex possessed were very cool and unique to his character).

Overall, I think the movie was more geared towards fans of the comic than anything else. For me personally, it was a bit hard to understand at parts. And, there were certain characters that were introduced that didn't quite resonate with me being unfamiliar with the comic.

To be honest, it was a bit theatrical - almost too over the top. Sure, it did have lots of action (in true western style). And, it even had it's own unique comic book style. But, I still left feeling there were some gaps in the movie and parts left unanswered.

As for the end, it just didn't leave me satisfied. I felt like I had watched a film that I had not quite understood. Maybe it was me, maybe it was not written for those who were unfamiliar with the comic. But, it just didn't do it for me.

If you really want to see this film and are a fan of the comic, I'd say it may be worth it for you. If not, you may have the same experience as me - you may want to skip this one all together.

When I first saw the trailer to this film, it didn't look like something that I really wanted to see. So, I held off on seeing it. Though, it did peak my curiosity...just a bit.

Recently, I made the decision to go ahead and check it out. Going into the movie, I had heard some really bad reviews about it. And, I knew going in - I may not like it.

But, I guess my curiosity got the better of me. Was it worth it? To be honest, I think it was executed pretty badly but had some really good entertainment value (kind of like this movie).

In a way, I guess the trailer can be a bit misleading. When I first saw the trailer, I thought I knew what the movie was going to be all about. And, I assumed the film would just take place in one location. But, I was wrong.

At first, the film is a bit slow. It introduces you to the characters and their lives. At times, the first couple of scenes felt kind of slow.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

But, the movie does take a turn (about halfway through). To be honest, it really surprised me. From there, let me just say - the events that happened were pretty unexpected. Quite frankly, I was shocked at some of the scenes and events that took place in the film - it truly threw me for a loop.

(Note: For those who have not seen the movie yet, I don't want to ruin it for you but let's me just say - there were a lot of "in your face" type moments that really shocked me).

In my opinion, I guess some of the scenes and events were really quite unexpected and a bit over the top. But, at the same time - it really did have some entertainment value. To be honest, I was stunned yet entertained at the same time. There were some parts of the movie that were so out there yet amused me at the same time.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

As for the movie itself, I think it had an interesting storyline. Though, it just was not executed that well. And, I think they could have made the story better.

There were parts that were interesting but at the same time - parts that were just too unbelievable and over the top. I think if they changed a few things with the script, it could have worked with better execution.

If you're looking for a really good sci-fi movie with a good storyline and meaning, this film is probably not the best pick. Though, if you enjoy sci-fi type films and want to be entertained in a comedic way - I'd say this film does have some entertainment value.

(Note: When I say "comedic way," it's style and entertainment value can be kind of compared to this movie).

All in all, I'd say this movie would be really fun to watch with a group (if there's nothing else out there to watch). To be honest, I have no more words for this film - I really don't know what else to say. It was both intriguing yet shocking and amusing to watch at the same time.

The Town (2010)

When I first saw the trailer for the movie, it really caught my eye. So, I decided to go and check it out.

Going into the film, I was really hoping this would be an interesting movie - one with a good story. Though, the story had a neat concept - I was very disappointed. Why?

To say the least, this movie really dragged in parts. And, it just wasn't the film alone - the dialogue along with the acting was not so great (in my opinion).

(Note: To be honest, I'm not much of a Ben Affleck fan. For the most part, his acting ability does not quite make it to the top of my list. But, that's just me).

For me personally, I felt some scenes felt "forced" and just did not come out naturally. Apart from the poor acting and the dialogue, it made it even worse that the movie seemed to really drag. Sure, there were a couple good action scenes. But, to be honest - there were some points in the film where it just lost my attention completely.

(Note: During these parts of the movie, I actually started to check the time. It was that slow).

Regarding the story itself, it had an interesting concept. Though, I felt that in parts - it just was executed poorly. With better dialogue along with better acting, I think this movie could have worked. But, the way it was - it just didn't do it for me.

(Note: Maybe it was me, but I felt the robbing of the bank scenes with the nuns outfits were a bit too copied from the opening scene of this movie. It just didn't feel original).

Can some people relate to this movie? It's possible. And, I believe this film definitely has an audience. If it were done better, then maybe I would have enjoyed it more. Just my thoughts.

If you've been thinking about seeing this film, I'd say - save your money. It's really not worth it in my opinion. But, if you really want to see it - it's best to hold off and watch as a rental.

Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)

Since I enjoyed the first movie, I decided to see the sequel. And, of all the nights - I saw this one on Halloween.

Going into this movie, I would say it's best to reacquaint yourself with the first one. Why? The reason being is that both movies are connected.

To be honest, it's more of a time line kind of issue. But, you will see a few familiar faces from the first movie. For those who have not seen the first one, it may be a bit confusing. So, I definitely recommend seeing the first film before watching this one.

(Note: For those who have seen this film already, you'll know what I'm talking about).

Regarding the film itself, it's very similar to the style of the first movie - documentary style. At first, I thought the home was the same home as the first. But, as the film progressed - it looked a bit different.

Since I had seen the first movie and was familiar with the documentary style, I was in anticipation as I watched the movie. So many times, I thought something spooky was going to happen. As it turns out, many of these scenes in the beginning were probably meant to keep the audience in anticipation.

(Note: So many times during the movie, I thought I saw shadows of monsters in the background during the night scenes. But, they were only regular objects. I'm wondering if they meant to give it that type of effect. Or, maybe my mind was playing tricks on me!)

In the beginning, the scenes were a bit short. And, many times - the camera view switched towards different parts of the home. As this happened throughout the film, it became faster every time (to show a change in day and night).

Compared to the first movie, this film felt like it went a bit faster. It was more the setting of the story and changes between night and day. To be honest, it was a bit tedious to keep seeing the same parts of the home over and over again with no change. Though, there is a reason to show this as the movie progresses.

As for the story itself, just like the first one - it's a bit comical at first. Being similar to the first movie, I would highly recommend watching this one with a group of friends. It's just very funny to watch some of the scenes and even more around a group of people.

(Note: For those of you who saw the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about. I especially enjoyed the pool scene. It was truly spooky and comical at the same time!)

So, I'm sure you're wondering if this is a scary movie or not. Though it follows the same formula as the first one, I would say it's just not as spooky and has the same effect as the first film.

With the first movie, we really didn't know what to expect. So, a lot of what happened in the first film was unexpected. And, I can honestly tell you - I felt extremely spooked out after seeing the first movie.

But, this film just didn't give me the same feeling as the first. To be honest, it was a bit more comical and funny than the first. Even during the scary parts, I laughed. I guess some of the scenes and the effects in this one made it less believable and more comical. But, that's just me.

(Note: For those who have seen this movie, you'll know what I'm talking about. Towards the end, some of the scenes just didn't seem real. I was actually laughing more than being afraid).

As for the end of the film, it didn't seem as disturbing as the first. And, in a way - it seemed like it just didn't have closure. The end was open ended and left to interpretation.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, I'm thinking they ended the movie the way they did in order to do another sequel. Maybe there are a series of movies planned for this franchise).

All in all, I would say this movie had it's moments. There were definitely a few scary scenes. It was "ok." And, it was entertaining at times. But, it just didn't have the same effect as the first film.

If you're in the mood for a horror type movie, I'd say this one is best to watch as a rental.

Red (2010)

When I first saw the trailer to this movie, I knew it was a film I wanted to see. It seemed like a movie that had it all: action, humor, and a bit of heart. Plus, with an all star cast - why not? It was definitely worth the wait.

Going into the film, I must admit - I read many reviews about it. It was interesting to read how this movie was compared to "The Expendables" being that it's a movie filled with both action and humor. But, something told me this film was definitely going to be better than "The Expendables." I was right.

(Note: For those who are interested, I saw "The Expendables" - I wasn't very impressed. Yes, it had a lot of action with some great action sequences. But, that's about it. As far as the overall movie and storyline, it didn't really rank that high at the top of my list. Sorry, just my opinion (for the fans of the film).

So, why is this movie called "Red?" Good question.

"Red" is an acronym that stands for: Retired, Extremely Dangerous. And let me tell you, the characters portrayed in the movie are extremely dangerous. I especially enjoyed both Bruce Willis' (who plays Frank Moses) and John Malkovich's (who plays Marvin Boggs) performances.

At the heart of it, this is a movie about growing older. And, I think many people can relate to this film. Though growing old is a way of life for us all, it does not mean we become useless and life has to be dull.

Even though we may grow old physically, if we are still young in our minds then we will always remain young at heart. And, being young at heart will give us the ability to make ourselves useful again.

In a way, I think growing old gives us life experiences. With experience, comes knowledge. And, with knowledge comes wisdom.

In the movie, the wisdom of team "Red" really comes out through all the characters. Each bring experience to the table, each bring their strengths. And, I found it quite entertaining to see how each of the characters really showcased themselves in the film.

So many times, we're used to seeing movies that involve young, superhero types. But, this movie begs the question - what happens when these superheroes grow older? Are they still superheroes? Or, do they retire away to seclusion?

In a sense, I think it's a little bit of both. Though, it's quite a dramatic change to live the fast life and then all of a sudden retire back to seclusion. It's one of those things where it's hard to get away from the kind of life you're used to living.

So, it's no wonder why some return to their prior lives even though they are older. It just goes to show that you can grow old physically, but if you are young at heart - you will remain young in your mind forever.

If you're looking for an action type of movie with a bit of humor and some heart, I definitely recommend this one.

Going into this film, I knew this was a different kind of movie. Since it's a film directed by Clint Eastwood, I knew this was a movie that was going to have meaning. I was right.

From the very beginning, this film captured my attention. The first couple of scenes were very intriguing and shocking at the same time. As the audience, you see what the characters sees as if you were in the situation yourself.

(Note: I won't ruin it for those who have not seen the movie, but let's just say there are situations depicted in the film where you think will never happen to you but they have to others. It's that real).

In a way, I think there are some who can relate to the film. It kind of makes you think and wonder, will this ever happen to me? For some, it has. And, for others it has not. But, for everyone else - we may know of someone or heard of someone we know where the unthinkable has happened to them. It's real. And, it's true.

The movie starts off by introducing different characters with three separate stories. And, these characters all have lives of their own - all in different parts of the world. But, as the movie progresses they all seem to experience the unknown. And, as fate may have it - all have something in common.

(Note: For those of you who have seen the movie, I thought the way the film unfolded and the way the stories were told were a bit like this movie).

On the surface, this may be a film that is viewed by some as a bit slow. Though some scenes may seem to be unnecessary on the exterior, I feel they added to the general tone and nature of the movie.

This is a movie that involves detail. And, it's one that's definitely important to pay attention to even the smallest things - they will connect and be quite relevant to the movie as it progresses.

I'm going to be honest, this is not a movie for everyone. It is for a much more sophisticated audience - it is a film that makes you think. It it not your typical Hollywood action type movie. It's truly a film that makes you wonder and think about the unknown.

It's a different kind of movie, not everyone will enjoy it. Those who are solely looking to be entertained with lots of action this is probably not for you. But, for those who are looking for a movie with meaning - you will not be disappointed.

As for the end of the film, I think Eastwood did a brilliant job in bringing everything together. If watching the film closely from beginning to end, you will understand the deeper meaning at the end and why he ended it the way he did.

(Note: For those who are Clint Eastwood fans, the movie's musical score is very "Eastwood" like in nature).

If you're in the mood for a different kind of movie with meaning that makes you think, I definitely recommend this one.

The Social Network (2010)

Just recently, I went out and saw this film adapted from the book. Going into the movie, I had already had some background knowledge about the story since I had already read the book. I'm glad I did.

To be honest, this is really a film where you may need some background information about the story. For those interested in the movie, I highly recommend reading the book before seeing the movie. But, why?

The reason being is that the movie is really set in a way to introduce characters and events from the original story. It pans back and forth from present day to the past. And, without having any type of knowledge about the story and the characters one can get confused.

As for the film itself, there are some gaps in the movie as there are scenes presented that may not make sense to someone who is not familiar with the story. In a nutshell, I suggest reading the book before watching the movie to get a better understanding and feel for the story.

Regarding the storyline, I think it played true to the scenes and story presented in the book. Though, it seems like there were bits and pieces left out. With the time limit of film, it's understandable how some elements can be left out of a story.

With that being said, I think this film has a good story to tell. Though, I just feel it could have been done better.

This was not the great story I was hoping for. It seemed a bit jarred with bits and pieces, a little here and there. But, I just did not feel it had the "punch" it needed to be great. When it ended, my initial reaction was - "That's it?" To say the least, I was a bit disappointed.

(Note: For all the fans of the film, these are just my thoughts. To me, the movie just felt it lacked the "punch" to be great. Though, the trailer was done quite nicely).

The one thing that did stand out was the performance from both Jesse Eisenberg, who portrayed Mark Zuckerberg, and surprisingly Justin Timberlake, who portrayed Sean Parker. Both actors portrayed their respective roles superbly. I was very impressed with both of their performances.

Overall, this movie seemed a bit low budget in nature. The story was there but I feel it could have been presented better. At times, it just seemed like they threw in bits and pieces together - I just did not feel that it had enough zing to it. In a way, it seemed like it was trying to tell a story but the story was just not entirely presented in a way that it could have been great -it lacked emotion. It could have been done better.

(Note: For those who have seen the movie, it really reminds me of this movie that was a bit similar in nature. Though, it was not made for the big screen - it was a television type of movie).

If you've been thinking about seeing this film, I recommend it more as a rental. It was "ok," but lacked the punch it needed to be great. If the movie had the same quality and feeling of the trailer, I think it could have been great.

Though, that's the thing - the film lacked the emotion and "punch" it needed to tell a great story. To me, the way the story was told and its presentation was just mediocre in nature.

For those who are really wanting to see the film, I highly recommend reading the book before seeing the movie. And, for those who have been debating whether to see this in the theatre - I recommend it more as a rental.

The American (2010)

So, I was all set and ready to watch this film. When I first saw the trailer for the movie, it really looked interesting. From the trailer alone, it felt like a drama and thriller type of film. Since I was so impressed with George Clooney's performance in this movie, I thought this one would be the same. I was wrong.

The beginning of the movie actually started out with a very abrupt scene. It was a bit of a mystery why the types of things happened during this first part of the film. In a way, I guess it was a reason for me to watch more. And, I did.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

Regarding the film itself, it was a bit of a mystery. There were bits and pieces revealed to the audience, but not everything all at once. At times, it was a bit slow. And, then it would pick up into an action scene or two. But, then it would go back again to the slowness of the film.

In a way, the majority of the scenes really seemed to me like normal, everyday life type of scenes. It definitely was not the drama and thriller type of film that I expected from when I first saw the trailer. To be honest, I think the trailer is a bit misleading - it just doesen't feel like the type of film depicted in the trailer. It's different. And, I'm not so sure if that's a good thing.

All in all, this movie was really slow. Sure, there were some action scenes here and there. But, they were very few and far between. At times, it really dragged. And, I felt a lot of the scenes portrayed the normal things people do in everyday life - it was a bit boring.

Overall, I wasn't too impressed with the movie. It didn't really have that much of a storyline. And, it really dragged at times. The few action scenes in the film didn't really make up for the slowness of the movie. As for the ending, it just wasn't that great.

For those who have been thinking about seeing this film, I'd say - save your money. It's really not worth it in my opinion. I don't even recommend it as a rental.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010)

Recently, I had the chance to see this sequel based on the original movie. And, I have to say - it was definitely a treat to see Michael Douglas playing the role of Gordon Gekko again. But, that's pretty much about all I enjoyed about this film.

As a fan of the first movie, I knew I wanted to see this one. But, somehow when I first saw the original trailer I didn't think it would be as good as the original - I was right.

Though, it did have it's ups and downs. And, yes - there were a few twists and turns with a few very unexpected moments. It really did surprise me.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. It was interesting to see how we were led to believe one thing but it really turned out differently. And, then it changed again near the end).

To be honest, this movie is really a film for those who have an interest in the world of finance. It's really made for those who are knowledgeable about the history of finance and who have followed the financial markets.

For those who are not as interested or knowledgeable about the finance industry, it may be a bit difficult to comprehend - there are many references and terminology used in the film that can only be understood for those who have an interest and knowledge about the topic of finance.

Regarding the film, the story really takes us back to the financial crisis and collapse of Wall Street in 2008. There are many references to the housing market at the time as well as the relationship and role home mortgages played during this period in history.

(Note: Again, this is really a movie for those who follow and have an interest in finance and the history of financial markets. It will be somewhat difficult to understand the references made for those who are not as knowledgeable or interested in the topic of finance).

At the heart of the movie, this film is really about one thing. And, that is greed and the impact greed can play on our society as well as our economy. Then, the question that is posed (as in the original film) remains the same. Is greed good?

The film really goes into the concept of greed by presenting the events that were a direct result of the speculation and the mania in our financial markets at the time. It really went into the mechanics of how speculation and perceptions can be manipulated to change entire markets - just like the original movie. But, this time - on a bigger scale and with more money.

To add to the story, there was a side story with Gordon Gekko's daughter, Winnie, played by Carey Mulligan, and Shia LaBeouf, which I didn't really care for. It was more of a distraction to the overall storyline than anything else - I didn't really see a need for it.

What I liked about the original movie was the focus on Bud Fox, played by Charlie Sheen, and his interaction and interest to work with his idol, Gordon Gekko. To me, that was what the original movie was all about - the game.

On the other hand, this film went back and forth between the game and the side story with Gekko's daughter. It just didn't make much sense. And, I just did not enjoy the scenes and the interactions in this part of the film.

Overall, I would say this movie is really one for those who have an interest and enjoy the subject of finance and follow the financial markets. It will be really difficult to comprehend some of the references (i.e. events, terminology, etc) in the movie for those who do not have the interest and/or knowledge about financial markets.

As a fan of the original film, this movie was not as good as the original. But, it did interest me being a fan of the first film as well as having an interest in the subject of finance.

(Note: For those who are fans of Oliver Stone movies, I'd say there's some of his style in the movie. But, there are moments where the film takes on a different style as well. It's very mixed. Some parts do not look as professional as others in terms of editing, acting in certain scenes, etc. For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

If you're a fan of the original film and also have an interest in finance, I'd say this movie is ok. Not great, but at the same time not the best. If I weren't a fan of the first film and did not have an interest in the subject of finance, I probably would not have enjoyed and understood this movie.

Righteous Kill (2008)

Since I'm a fan of both Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, this movie was definitely one I looked forward to seeing. It was a real treat to see both of them side by side together in this film.

This movie is really one that can take you on a wild goose chase - it's really a "who done it" type of movie. Basically, the film is about a serial killer who goes around town killing those who kill others and do wrong.

(Note: It's interesting seeing this film, it kind of reminds me of this television series - it's kind of the same concept).

Both De Niro and Pacino play detectives assigned to the case. In turn, it then becomes a mystery - who is the serial killer? And, more importantly why is the serial killer doing the things that they are going - what's the motive?

All throughout the movie, there are bits and pieces of clues scattered around. Though, a lot of these clues can actually be a bit misread and misinterpreted. This is really a movie where it's important to pay attention - there's a series of flashbacks and scenes that play an important role to the overall story.

While watching the film, there were many times where I was a bit misled myself. So many times I thought I had figured out the true identity of the serial killer yet only to find that I had not. This film has a lot of twists and turns - the answer is not as simple and easy as some may think.

I will admit, this is really a movie for those who enjoy thriller type of films with a lot of twists and turns. If you're not really into thriller type movies, you may not enjoy this as much.

The film does have some moments where it can drag a bit. But, some of these moments are really important as they add to the clues presented in the story. And, it's one of those things where you really have to pay attention to the movie in order to help to see how the pieces all fit together.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. It really kept my attention throughout the film - the twists and turns really kept me wanting to watch more. Plus, it was a real treat to see both De Niro and Pacino on the big screen together.

If you enjoy thriller type of films with a lot of twists and turns, I do recommend this one.

When I first saw the preview for this film, I knew it was something I definitely wanted to see. Though, I was a bit up in the air as to whether or not it was worth it to see in the movies or better to hold off as a rental.

As it turns out, I went to go see it recently at the movies. It was an "ok" type of film. But, it wasn't really the great story I had hoped for.

Basically, the concept of the movie touches upon the choices you make and how those choices can affect your life. One of the main themes of the film has to do with dealing with the choice between a career (money) and love. And, when it comes down to it - which choice is better? And, which will make you happy?

Of course, in the film both of the main characters, Erin (played by Drew Barrymore) and Garrett (played by Justin Long), really didn't want to make that choice - they wanted both the career (money) and love to both work out. Though, when faced between which to take - things didn't go the way they had hoped.

Though, there was one thing they failed to consider when making choices - their emotions. And, emotions are a part of us. No matter how much we try sometimes to base our decisions to be as objective as possible, our emotions are what makes us human.

In a way, this film kind of reminded me of this movie. Though, it did go in a linear time frame - it didn't switch between the present and the past.

As for the movie itself, it was entertaining and had some funny moments. The storyline did resemble a few other films I've seen in the past. And, it was a bit predictable.

Though, there was a point in the film where I thought it would end. To my surprise, it didn't end and kept going. In a way, I was a bit relieved - if it ended at this point it would have been a disappointment.

(Note: For those who have seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about. I was just a bit surprised that it didn't end at that point in the movie because it really seemed that it would).

Overall, I would say this is an "ok" movie. It wasn't horrible but at the same time it wasn't the greatest. I would say this is a movie best to watch as a rental for those times when you're in the mood for a romantic comedy type of film.

Salt (2010)

When I first saw the trailer for this film, it really looked like a movie I wanted to see. Though, despite my interest after seeing the trailer - I waited a bit to see what others thought.

From the reviews I read, many people just didn't like the film. Though, I went to see it anyways. And, I can say - I was really disappointed.

The film started out with a really good storyline - it was very interesting and unique in its own way. Though, somehow the movie lost direction after awhile - things just started falling apart.

There was a point in the movie where I thought I knew which direction the film was going. And, if it had gone in the direction that I thought - I think it could have worked. But, it didn't - it took a turn. And, that turn was for the worse. It only went downhill from there.

(Note: For those who have seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about. I was a bit surprised at how the movie had a really good opening and introduction to the story. It just all got lost as the movie progressed).

Once the movie and its storyline started falling apart, it really lost direction. From this point on, it really felt like the whole movie was just thrown together. And, not in a good way - a bad way. It all seemed hurried in an effort to just finish the movie.

Though the film has a good storyline and interesting concept, it really lacks focus. And, this is what made the movie make a turn for the worse.

For those who have been thinking about seeing this film, I'd say - save your money. It's really not worth it in my opinion. I don't even recommend it as a rental.

Eat Pray Love (2010)

Putting aside my personal feelings about Julia Roberts and my cynical view of what passes for chick flicks these days, I have finally seen Julia Robert’s big summer chick flicks, Eat, Pray Love. The movie is based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling novel of the same name. Eat, Pray Love was one of those books that everyone talked about. It was even featured on Oprah’s Book Club. If Oprah likes it, I should like it too. Right?

I still have not read the book, therefore I will try to review the movie with an open mind. Eat, Pray, Love is the diary of Liz Gilbert’s journey of self-discovery. The movie is narrated by Julia Roberts, which is supposed to make it seem more like a personal diary.

The story begins with Liz Gilbert on a bicycle in Bali, on her way to visit a local wise man. Ketut tells her she will have two marriages (one long, one short), lose all her money and will return to Bali one day and he will teach her all of his wisdom.

Back in New York, Liz is a successful author married to Stephen (played by Billy Crudup) a man who apparently changes careers like he changes shirts. They have what many people would consider the perfect life, a beautiful suburban home and they are planning a family. While Liz dreams of visiting exotic places, Stephen considers another career change.

Liz’s growing unhappiness prompts her to pray to God for guidance. I wasn’t exactly clear on the source of her discontent. Liz feels unfulfilled or unhappy or unsatisfied. In my eyes, Liz is simply a woman who doesn’t know what she wants. Perhaps the sudden realization that she was married to a handsome, yet very flaky husband. I have never been married, so forgive my ignorance on how you would not have known this guy was flaky when you married him. At the divorce proceedings, he represents himself - he has one semester of law. Clearly a man who doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life. But he loves Liz and fights the divorce.

Soon after the divorce, Liz becomes involved with David, a cute, young struggling actor, played by James Franco. She moves in with him and adopts his bohemian lifestyle, including meditation and attending his Guru’s ashram. Even though she visits the ashram regularly with David, Liz cannot even follow along with the chanting or get into the spirit of meditation. Then one night, Liz is lying on the floor crying. (As I said, a woman who doesn’t know what she wants).

The very talented, Viola Davis is wasted in her part as Liz Gilbert’s friend and agent, Delia Shiraz. Liz goes to Delia to tell her, she has decided to make a drastic change in her life by taking off for a year to travel. To marvel at life and to be herself, without defining her life by a man. This is where the Eating, Praying Loving begins.

Italy / Eat
Spending four months eating your way through the delicious cuisine of Italy is not bad way to begin any journey. Liz Gilbert rents a run down, old apartment in Rome and embarks upon her journey of self discovery by diving face first into pastas, pizza and gelato with wholehearted glee. Not worrying about carbs, calories or weight gain, Liz hires an Italian tutor, explores the city and makes new friends. In Italy, Liz learns the meaning of “Il Dolce Far Niente” - the art of doing nothing.

India / Pray
After four months of gorging her way through Italy, Liz goes to the ashram of David’s guru in India. The India segment of the movie is slow and fell apart for me. I didn’t understand her desire to pursue meditation, when she clearly didn’t ‘get it” in New York. She scrubs floors and tries to meditate. She meets a Texan played by Richard Jenkins, who is there to unburden himself of years of guilt and the loss of his family. After four months, it is in India that Liz finally let’s go of the guilt she feels about her divorce and bad relationships.

Bali / Love
As Ketut predicted, Liz returns to Bali to learn at the foot of the wise man. She rents an incredible place that looks like paradise. She spends her mornings with Ketut, listening to his wisdom and she finally finds peace in meditation. Who wouldn’t find peace, sitting quietly in one of the most beautiful places on earth? While riding her bike, Liz is run off the road by a car. The car’s driver is Felipe, a Brazilian divorce played by Javier Bardem. Even though both of of them bear the scars of heartbreak and bitter divorces, they eventually fall in love.

Watching Eat, Pray Love left me thinking. Why do people need to travel to far flung places to find themselves? Why would a person who lives in New York City, a place with some of the best restaurants in the world need to travel to find great food? Why, when you are trying to separate yourself from the influence of the men in your life would you travel to India to practice your boyfriend’s religion and return to Bali on the prediction of a toothless old man. If you can afford to take off for a year and travel the world, you don’t have as many problems as you think you do!

Perhaps these are questions that were answered in the book. If you read the book, please leave a comment and enlighten me.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)

When I first posted the movie preview for this film, it was definitely one film I had on my "to watch" list for the summer. Though, I did wait awhile to see it until I got into my fantasy action type mood. It was definitely worth it.

Like many Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer films that I've seen (such as this one), this movie did not disappoint.

From the very beginning, this film really caught my attention. I really liked how the movie opened up.

It began with a story - a story that spanned many generations. These are the types of films that really intrigue me since I'm somewhat of a history buff and all.

(Note: For those who have seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about).

So, the movie takes us from the very past to the near past and fast forwards to the present day. I felt the way the story was told was very well done. (In true Disney fashion!)

As for the storyline, I don't really want to say much as I don't want to ruin it for those who have not seen the film yet. Though, I will say it's a very typical story. A story about a boy named Dave (played by Jay Baruchel) who has been deemed as the one that will bring peace to the world.

Though, this boy does not believe he can be the one - he does not see himself as a hero. He feels he is just ordinary, just like everyone else. And, he must find the strength within himself to help guide him in his quest.

Along the way, he does have a mentor, Balthazar (played by Nicholas Cage) who teaches him all that he knows about the power of magic. At first, Dave does not believe. That is until he witnesses the power of magic first hand.

Though, it does take Dave awhile to hone his skills and achieve the type of power Balthazar possesses. It takes both time and skill. And, in the end - Dave must choose between his ordinary and familiar life and this new found extraordinary life.

However, no matter how hard Dave tries he discovers that he cannot not run away from this new life. In a recent turn of events, the fate of the world soon lays in his hands. And, Dave is the only one that can save the world. So, he chooses his destiny - a life where he chooses to risk his own in order to save the lives of others.

While watching the film, there is a bit of action mixed in with some moments of humor. I think they did a good job in setting the story and introducing the characters in the film. The action scenes in the movie intensified more towards the end.

(Note: For those who have seen the movie, there was a point near the end where I thought the film would end. But, to my surprise it did not. I found it a bit odd but knew it had to end the way that it did since it is a Disney movie).

Overall, I enjoyed the movie very much. It had it all - a good storyline, magic, action and a bit of comedy. I couldn't ask for anything more.

If you're in the mood for a fantasy type film with a bit of action and comedy, I do recommend this one.

Dinner for Schmucks (2010)

When I first saw the trailer for this film, I thought it was a bit silly. Actually, too silly. To be honest, it didn't really look like my kind of movie - slapstick comedy is not really my kind of comedy.

Though, this film was highly recommended to me by many. I was told this movie was silly but really funny. So, I decided to take this advice since I was in the mood for comedy - I'm glad I did.

From the very beginning of the movie, there were so many funny and entertaining moments. I thought the opening scene was a bit weird but very comical. I have to admit, I was laughing even before the dialogue in the movie had started.

(Note: For those who saw the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. It was very interesting how the movie began - the opening scene was very unique in its own way. It tied in with the story very nicely).

Basically, the story is very simple. It's about your average typical guy, Tim Conrad, (played by Paul Rudd) who is trying to climb the corporate ladder. And, this involves constantly trying to impress his boss and his higher ups with new ideas.

One day, one of his ideas sparks an interest with his boss. And, this idea alone gave him an invitation to a special dinner party - a dinner party where you are required to invite a "schmuck" or someone to make fun of.

In a way, you could call it a sort of initiation. If Barry were to attend the dinner party and pass the initiation, then he would be granted the promotion he has been waiting for all these years.

What I thought was great about this film (apart from the comedy) was the way the film progressed - it set the stage for the dinner party which happened near the end of the movie.

From the point leading up to the dinner party, we learn more about the different characters in the movie and how they come into play. It also introduces us to Barry Speck, (played by Steve Carrell) who becomes the "schmuck" Tim invites to the dinner party as part of his intitation.

Along the way, we also meet Thurman Murch (played by Zach Galifianakis), who plays Barry's nemesis and co-worker. I really enjoyed his performance and the rivalness between him and Barry - especially during the ultimate showdown at the dinner party. (Ever since this movie, he has played this type of weird and zany character - I do somewhat enjoy watching his silly antics on the big screen).

(Note: For those who have seen the movie, it was so funny how they presented two different types of "powers" possessed at the dinner party. I don't want to ruin it for those have not seen the film, but let's just say it was definitely a mind trip).

Overall, I really enjoyed this film. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it - it was silly but funny at the same time. I was entertained throughout the movie. And, I would say it was definitely worth it.

If you're in the mood for a comedy type of movie, I do recommend this one.

The Ghost Writer (2010)

Lately, I've been in a thriller and suspense type of mood. So, I decided to check this movie out based on the novel.

Personally, I have an interest in thriller and suspense types of films that involve stories about writers. Maybe it's because I consider myself as a writer - it's very interesting for me to see a writer's life depicted on the big screen. My interest in this film came as no surprise.

(Note: One film I've enjoyed in the past depicting a writer's life has been this one. There's just something about watching films that are about writers and their lives that interest me).

The movie takes us into the world of ghostwriting. The main character, an unnamed Ghostwriter (played by Ewan McGregor), takes on a special assignment to write the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister (played by Pierce Brosnan).

In taking the assignment, the "Ghost Writer" finds he is in for more than he bargained for in taking the job. In a way, the job involved more than just writing - it involved finding and uncovering knowledge to some very deep and dark secrets.

In turn, his knowledge of these "secrets" put him in a very dangerous position - a position where his life was at stake. And, this was not what he signed up to do - this was not in his job description.

Though, he tried to run away and cut his ties to the project - everywhere he turned became dangerous for him. It got to the point where he could no longer walk in public and had to look out for any sign of danger. This became very problematic.

The opening scene of the film is a bit weird. I'm still not quite sure why the film opened up the way it did. The film did start a bit slow, but the momentum built up gradually as the movie progressed.

This is a movie where you have to really pay attention and listen. There are parts of the story and characters introduced that play as main ingredients to the overall storyline. If you do not closely monitor the movie, you may miss something. And, you can catch it on a second viewing.

In a way, this movie is more like a mystery than anything else. While watching the film, it really kept me guessing. There are some scenes and actions in the movie that were a bit mysterious. And, it kept my attention - I wanted to watch more to see how the pieces fit together.

There were a lot of twists and turns in the film. Just when I thought all the pieces fit together, something else came up. It definitely is not a predictable movie.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, I found it very interesting how the film ended - it was quite a change in the turn of events. I thought it was brilliant how the pieces finally came all together, it definitely surprised me!).

Overall, I enjoyed the film. Though, I have to warn you - it's not a film that has a lot of action. There's mostly dialogue mixed in with bits of action. What I enjoyed was the storyline - the mystery, the suspense and the way all the pieces came together at the end.

If you're in the mood for a thriller and suspense type of movie, I do recommend this one.

Sex and the City 2 (2010)

So, I finally had the chance to catch this movie based on the popular book and television series.

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. While I am a fan of the series and did enjoy the first movie, I wasn't quite sure what to expect in the sequel.

I mean, what else could they possibly add? Only more fun and laughter. And, that was basically what this movie was all about - more fun and more laughter.

The opening scene was a bit long and quite extravagant. I won't ruin it for you, but let's just say it seemed like a big deal - very flashy and very Hollywood.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

Basically, this movie was about something a lot of people can relate to - just wanting to get away from it all. In a sense, it was about taking a vacation away from real life. Isn't that what we all want sometimes?

At first, the vacation can seem like a fantasy - too good to be true. But, when that fantasy turns out to be a reality - sometimes it doesen't turn out the way we want it to be. And, then all we ever want is our reality back. This is what the film is about.

Since I'm a fan of the series, I enjoyed seeing the characters all come back together - it brought back a lot of memories. To be honest, I think this movie is really for those who enjoy the series.

(Note: For those who are not fans of the series and/or have not seen the series before, a word of caution - it may be a bit confusing if you are not familiar with the characters. Unlike the first movie, this film (in my opinion) is mostly understandable for those who are familiar with the series and the characters).

It's not the greatest movie, not Oscar worthy. But, it is entertaining. And, it brings it back to what the series is all about - friends, the ups and downs of life, and being around those who care.

As in the series, there are ups and downs - good times and bad times. But, in the end - the good outweigh the bad.

Comparing both the first movie and this one, I like the first one better - it was more defining and heart warming. Though, this one is more like the series - entertaining and funny.

Overall, I think this was an "ok" movie. It entertained me and I enjoyed seeing the characters come back to the big screen. In a way, I felt a little nostalgic - it made me want to see the series again. Maybe I will.

If you are a fan of the series and are in the mood for a comedy type film, this one will make for a good rental.

"No one gets away clean."

Recently, I had the chance to see this film again. This is definitely a powerful movie with an important message.

The basic concept of the film is about the war on drugs, who is involved and what the government is doing about it. What is interesting about the movie is that it shows not just one side of the story but many sides of the story.

We see the viewpoint of those involved on different levels of the law - the highest levels and lawmaker side (such as the role Michael Douglas portrays) and those at the lower levels on the law enforcement side (such as the role Don Cheadle portrays).

Even further, we see the viewpoint from those involved on the other side - the drug business itself. From the highest levels (such as the role played by Catherine Zeta Jones) to the lowest levels of the business - we see from different perspectives.

And, this movie is really about just that - perspective. We say there is a war on drugs. But, who are we really waging this war against?

We think the enemy is a drug warlord who is infiltrating our country and our future. But, the real enemy may not fit that profile. Maybe the real enemy is ourselves - it starts at home.

One of the most powerful quotes in the film was when Michael Douglas said, "If there is a war on drugs, then many of our family members are the enemy. And I don't know how you wage war on your own family."

(Note: For those who have seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

I think this movie had a very strong message. One of the main characters (portrayed by Michael Douglas) thought the way to win the war on drugs was to shut these drug operations down and find those responsible. As the film progresses, we see him trying time and time again to attempt to stop it through the legal process by meeting with other lawmakers and law enforcement agencies.

What he found was this war has and will continue. And, while he was trying to fight the war on drugs - there was another war happening right at home. And, this involved his daughter who ironically became a drug addict.

This really showed him that to win the war on drugs was not external but internal - it starts at home. And, the only way we can win the war is through education and by paying attention to those who matter the most - family.

I think what made this film unique was the way it showed the different perspectives. And, as an audience it was interesting to see multiple sides of the story.

The way the entire film was shot was very interesting. It felt like a documentary style type of movie. And, the whole look of the movie changed when we saw things on the "Mexico" side versus the "U.S." side - it's very interesting.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. It is a very serious film on a very serious topic. The way the movie portrays different perspectives to bring it all together really makes it a powerful and brilliant film. At times, I found myself surprised - there are some twists and turns, it is not a predictable movie.

If you're in the mood for a drama type of movie with a powerful message, I highly recommend this one.

Indie Film Spoof - "Toy Story 3: Inception"

Movie Preview: Salt

With summer in the air, there's going to be a lot of action type films coming out. I'm really looking forward to seeing this film.

According to Wikipedia:

"Salt is an upcoming American action thriller film directed by Phillip Noyce, written by Kurt Wimmer and Brian Helgeland, and starring Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, who is accused of being a KGB sleeper agent, and goes on the run to try to clear her name. The film will have a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 22 and will be released in North America on July 23, 2010, and August 20, 2010, in the United Kingdom."

Inception (2010)

I was so excited to see this film, I caught it on the first day during an early show. As many who read this blog know, I've been waiting to see this movie for months. I'm glad I did - it definitely was worth the wait.

(Note: Before I go any further, I'd like to say that I'm going to be as abstract with this review as possible. For those who read my reviews, you know I do not like to go into too much detail as I don't want to ruin the film for you - I tend to focus more on the concepts and ideas rather than the description of the movie itself. As a moviegoer, I believe there should be somewhat of an element of mystery when going to view and watch movies).

I must say, Christopher Nolan (who directed the film) brilliantly portrayed this piece as a real mystery. Though, it was more than your typical mystery because the mystery had a twist. And, the twist was brilliantly hidden in pieces inside the mind.

What's even more astounding is the take in the film on the mind and our perceptions. We each perceive things in a different way, remember things we want to remember yet block out those things we don't want to remember. And, then that which we do remember becomes our reality - a reality with a twist.

Though this reality is simply an illusion, one which we want to remember and only causes us to see one side of the story. Yet, we know there are always two sides of the story. The side we want to see. And, the truth.

And, this brings us to the main character - Dominic Cobb (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), a man who chooses to remember what he wants to remember. And, in turn blocks out the things he does not want to remember. In essence, his reality becomes that which he chooses to remember - that which he chooses to see. And, that is what I refer to as "reality with a twist."

Without going into too much detail into the plot (as I feel telling the plot may ruin it for you), I will say this film is very much like this one - it deals with the same concept, the mind.

And, it goes on to show the power of the mind and it's ability to manipulate reality and in turn, manipulate the truth. The reality of what one believes then becomes the truth to that individual simply by believing.

So, the core of this movie really boils down to belief. And, it shows how powerful belief can be - it can hurt us and it can also set us free.

Depending on what our beliefs are, there is an element of reality that causes us to believe the things we believe. But, do our beliefs only exist in our mind? Or, is there a separate reality apart from us? What is real? And, what is in our mind?

Sometimes we can take what is in our mind too far. This movie depicts how the lines of fantasy and reality can start to cross and blur the distinction - it causes our fantasies to become our reality. And, when this happens - it can be dangerous and lead to destruction.

(Note: For those of you who saw the film, you'll know what I'm talking about here. It's very interesting how the lines of fantasy and reality were depicted in the movie. At times, it was almost as if the fantasy was the reality. But, we were only led to believe and see the fantasy, not the reality as we were not exposed to all sides of the story at times).

Since I'm a big fan of psychological thrillers and enjoy films that have to do with the mind and the perception of the mind, I can honestly say this movie was definitely worth it. I really liked how the story was told in pieces, we were given only bits of the puzzle as the movie progressed. And, at the end - all the pieces fit together. Or, so it seems. And, the ending is what makes this film so brilliant.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. This is one film that I'm going to see again. And, maybe a few more times. It's definitely a movie that intrigues me - one that I can watch over again for years to come.

If you're in the mood for a psychological thriller type film, I highly recommend this one.

Predators (2010)

I've been really looking forward to this film based on the original movie series.

Since it was produced by Robert Rodriquez and his production company "Troublemaker Studios," I knew this movie would have a lot of action - it definitely did. And, it was worth it.

From the very first scene, it was action all the way. The first scene was pretty crazy. I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say it felt like a roller coaster ride.

Throughout the movie, it's almost as if you have to be alert at all times. There are many scenes that really jilted and surprised me as if I were in the scene itself. You never know if something is going to come out of nowhere or not. Watching the film was definitely an experience.

Regarding the film itself, I liked how it played true to the original movie. From the music to the overall look of the film, it really brought me back to the original "Predator."

Like the original, this film was set in a jungle like atmosphere. Though, there's a slight twist regarding the setting of the film. I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say it's not what you expect.

Speaking of expectations, this film really had a lot of twists and turns. There were a few scenes where I expected something to happen or not happen, and the movie really went in another direction. At times, I was surprised though pleased with the outcome of some of the scenes - it really did feel like a roller coaster ride.

I think Adrien Brody (who played one of the main characters) gave a really good performance. His character was another one that had a bit of a surprise - I thought I had him figured out. Though, there was a point in the film where his actions really surprised me. The same goes for a few of the other characters (I won't ruin it for you).

(Note: I'm not going to go into too much detail on the plot and the storyline as I don't want to ruin the film for you. Usually, I try to be as less concrete as possible in my reviews and focus more on concepts (as opposed to overall plot and description) to give you a general idea of my thoughts and opinions without giving away too much. As a movie goer, I feel that a bt of mystery is all part of the movie watching experience).

Overall, I enjoyed the film. It was a mix of sci-fi with a lot of action. And, it played true to the original. The twists and turns really did throw me for a loop - I was entertained throughout. This movie did not disappoint.

If you're in the mood for a sci-fi type of film with a lot of action, I definitely recommend this one.

Movie Preview: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

With summer in the air, there's going to be a lot of action type films coming out. I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie - rarely do Disney films disappoint me. And, I usually enjoy Jerry Bruckheimer produced films.

According to Wikipedia:

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice is an upcoming 2010 fantasy adventure film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, directed by Jon Turteltaub, stars Nicolas Cage, and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, the team behind the National Treasure franchise. The story, although totally different, is said to have been loosely based on the Sorcerer's Apprentice segment in Disney's Fantasia, which in turn is based on the late 1890s symphonic poem by Paul Dukas and 1797 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ballad. The film was originally set to be released on July 16, 2010, but will now be released two days earlier on July 14, 2010."

Falling Down (1993)

I had the opportunity to see this film recently. All I can say is, wow! This film is amazing in the way it tells a story - it's really a story about perspective and how we view things.

In the movie, we have a normal all around guy William Foster (played by Michael Douglas) who followed all the rules in life yet for some reason still ended up with the short end of the stick.

First his family, then his job - it all took a downturn spiral. Factor in having a really bad day (we've all had them!) where nothing seems to go his way and people try to push him around - it just gets worse from there. And, by worse - I mean ballistic.

It's like just being pushed over the edge, to the point where you are so down in life that you have nothing to lose yet everything to gain. Very interesting concept.

I think what's more interesting about the movie is the different perspectives - each character he interacts with seems to see him in a different way, a bad way. And, it's rather comical yet brilliant to see and hear the dialogue from different points of view.

One of my favorite quotes was during the beginning of the film in the convenient store. All Foster wanted to do was get some change for the pay phone.

Though, it ended up being quite a battle with the shop keeper even to do that. And, what I found interesting about this scene was the two different viewpoints portrayed. I don't want to ruin it for those who have not seen the film, but let's just say it was a pretty powerful yet comical scene with some very good points.

(Note: One of my favorite quotes in this scene was when Foster said, "You think I'm a thief? Oh, you see, I'm not the thief. I'm not the one charging 85 cents for a *stinking* soda! You're the thief. I'm just standing up for my rights as a consumer.")

And, it just wasn't this scene - it was scene after scene with the same message. Again, it was all a matter of perspective - we have different viewpoints on how we see things based on our past and present experiences in life. There were definitely some very brilliant moments in the film.

This movie may not dazzle everyone. It's one of those films that you really have to read into - it has a message, a very powerful message that may not get across to everyone. But, if you listen carefully to the words and pay to attention to the actions taken you just might catch them.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. It's one of those movies that really does make you think about how we view the world - people see the world through different eyes. One person may see things in a different way than someone else. And, in the end - it's all a matter of perspective.

If you're in the mood for an action type of movie that makes you think, I definitely recommend this one.

The Last Airbender (2010)

Since I'm a fan of M. Night Shyamalan , I was really excited to see this film based on the animated television series.

To be honest, it's been awhile since I've seen a good M. Night Shyamalan film - his past few films have not been all that great in my opinion. So, going into this one - I was really hoping to be dazzled. Though, I wasn't - it was a bit disappointing.

The movie is more of a fantasy adventure type of film. In a way, it kind of reminded me of this movie.

Basically, it's about a boy who is supposed to be a kind of "protector" of the people (aka The Avatar). Though, when faced with the responsibility and the duties of his role he is reluctant to pursue it - being a hero is a lot of responsibility which involves having a life of solitude without having any ties such as family and friends. And, to the boy this life of solitude is just not the kind of life he wants to live.

So, the movie is really about a hero who doesen't want to be a hero. Though, with the current situation of the war in the story he is faced with the dilemma of being a hero and protecting the people. Otherwise, there will be no protector for the people.

In a way, some of the themes of this film is a bit similar the themes of other films such as "The Matrix" - there's a prophecy that someone is going to protect the people. The theme in this film is no different.

There are some battle type scenes in the movie as the hero (aka The Avatar) and his army (consisting of another boy and a girl - brother and sister) work together to gather up villages of people to fight the existing regime.

(Note: The battle scenes are a bit corny looking. I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say it reminds me of watching kung-fu in slow motion - it's a bit weird looking).

I think this movie is for a certain type of person - one who enjoys these kinds of films. And, maybe for those who enjoyed watching the series.

Though, this film really didn't do it for me - it just didn't feel like it came together. The storyline wasn't really well executed and a lot of the scenes were not really played out well especially the battle scenes - I just didn't find myself entertained.

Now, it could just be me. Maybe some who enjoy this genre may have differing opinions. Though, I do enjoy fantasy adventure type of movies from time to time such as this one.

Overall, I can't really recommend this film - I just didn't find myself entertained. The storyline was not very well executed and the scenes just didn't play out well for me. I was really hoping this movie would be good, though it was rather disappointing.

If you're contemplating seeing this movie, I'd say it's best to pass on it.

The Last Station (2009)

Recently, I had the opportunity to see this film based on the famous and gifted writer, Leo Tolstoy. For me, this film was a very interesting one to watch.

Since I'm a history buff, I do enjoy watching period pieces and history type movies. This one is no exception.

Basically, this film tells the story of the last days of Leo Tolstoy (played by Christopher Plummer). At the end of his life, it seems Tolstoy has grown to be a very bitter man - wanting to be away from society and find peace within himself.

The main conflict in the story lies with his wife, Sophia (played by Helen Mirren) who does not seem to understand Tolstoy's views upon life and upon humankind. It shows a very love and hate relationship between the two.

Then enters, Vladimir Chertkov (played by Paul Giamatti), the leader of Tolstoy's devoted disciples. And, Chertkov is intent on serving the people with Tolstoy's money.

So, you begin to see the conflict here. On one hand, you have Chertkov who is tries to influence Tolstoy to hand over his estate and all his money to his cause (aka the people) when he dies. And, on the other hand you have Tolstoy's wife, Sophia, who is intent on having her family taken care of when Tolstoy passes away who constantly tries to suade Tolstoy to abandon his cause and support his family by leaving them with his fortune. So, the big issue at hand is a matter of Tolstoy's will when he dies - who gets what, when and where.

Quite honestly, it was a bid sad to see all the quarreling in this film about Tolstoy's will. In a way, to me it seemed a bit selfish and kind of hypocritical. Chertkov's argument for Tolstoy's fortune was that it would be for the people, but would it really be used for that cause? And, Sophia's argument was that Tolstoy had a duty to take care of his family when he left this world. It seemed Tolstoy was left to be in quite a dilemma.

To add to the story, enter Valentin Bulgakov (played by James McAvoy) who gains a new position as a private secretary for Tolstoy.

Bulgakov is young and very naive about the world. Though, he possesses a sense of innocence and goodness that reminded Tolstoy how he felt and how things were when he was a young man.

The dynamic between the old and the young and the views portrayed between generations is very nicely depicted - it gives you a sense of how sometimes you begin to see things in a different perspective as you grow older.

Overall, I think this film was descent. Since I enjoy period pieces and history type movies, I could be a bit biased. Though, this film is not for everyone. If you don't really like these types of movies, it may not be for you.

For me, I especially enjoy autobiographical films - going into it I was interested in the subject matter. That is probably why I enjoyed the movie.

(Note: Now, that I've watched the film I'm interested in reading some of Tolstoy's works. If anyone out there has read any of them, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts).

If you're in the mood for a history type of film and enjoy period pieces, I think this one is worth taking a look.

It's Complicated (2009)

Since I was in a comedy type of mood, I decided to check out this movie. Honestly, I did not have high expectations for it - I thought it might have just been an ok kind of film. Boy, was I wrong - it was hilarious!

So, we have the main character Jane (played by Meryl Streep) who is a self reliant and divorced business woman (she owns a successful bakery).

(Note: I'm not sure if they casted her in this role because of her performance in this film - there's just so much enthusiasm involved when seeing Meryl Streep on the big screen getting excited about cooking. I'm thinking maybe it's a passion of hers in real life).

And, then there's her ex-husband Jake (played by Alec Baldwin) who is at the present time married to another woman. Though, it seems Jake wants Jane back. And, of course through a slew of encounters - they get together. As the title of the film goes, it gets a bit complicated.

So, it seems as if Jane is having an affair with her ex-husband Jake. Pretty complicated, eh?

And, of course Jane struggles with the thought that she is doing something wrong with Jake. It then becomes a game of cat and mouse - Jane tries to pull away as Jake keeps trying to reel her back in. That is until Adam (played by Steve Martin), Jane's architect, comes along.

Now, Adam seems to be the complete opposite of Jake - he is very soft spoken and basically an all around nice guy. Jake, on the other hand, is a bit of a "bad boy." So, Adam takes a liking to Jane and Jane seems to reciprocate. Though, it's Jake who then becomes a bit jealous and constantly attempts to step in and pry Adam apart from Jane.

Then, it all becomes a question for Jane - what does she want? Does she want to stay with her ex-husband Jake and continue this affair behind the back of his current wife? Or, does Jane want to start over and explore the possibilities with someone new like Adam? What does Jane want?

On some levels, I think this is a very relatable film. Basically, it's about choice - having the choice to either stay in the past or move forward and start over again. How many times has this type of dilemma come up in our own lives? I'm sure we can all think of a few moments like these.

Throughout the movie, I see a different side of Meryl Streep - the good side. It's weird because when I remember Meryl Streep on film the characters she portrays that always come up in my mind are the ones where she plays a more serious and stern role like her performance in this film.

(Note: Coincidentally, I had just seen Meryl Streep in this movie. And, yes she did play the stern type of character that reminds me of her).

Probably the last film I saw Meryl Streep in where she played a more happy, go lucky type of role was in this film. It's just a little bit weird for me to see her smiling and laughing all the time. I'm used to seeing her in a very serious role.

This film had some really good moments - I laughed throughout the movie. Though I'm not going to say it's as funny as this film, I definitely was entertained.

As for the end, it was a bit unexpected. I thought the film was going to go in a slightly different direction, so the ending surprised me a bit. But, in a good way.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. It made for a good comedy type movie - it had a lot of funny moments and I was entertained throughout.

(Note: For those who have seen the film, the scene with the laptop was classic. That was such a crazy scene, I couldn't believe that scene -it made me laugh so much!)

If you're in the mood for a comedy type of film, I do recommend this one.

Indie Film Short - Batman Fan Film City of Scars

He is pushed past his limits to the point where his focus becomes revenge on all who stand in his way, including many of Gotham’s underworld. Finally, Batman is forced to look at the psychological profile of his own mind and accept the consequences of his life to find resolve."

Unthinkable (2009)

Going into this film, I was not prepared to see the realism depicted - it really caught me off guard. Let's just this is a major "in your face" type of movie.

Basically, it's about an American Muslim, Yousef (played by Michael Sheen), who claims to have planted nuclear bombs in three U.S. cities in an attempt to request demands from the U.S. in exchange for the location of the bombs. And, it is Henry Harold Humpries' aka 'H' (played by Samuel L. Jackson), a former U.S. Chief Interrogation agent, job to interrogate and force Yousef to reveal the locations of the bombs by any means necessary.

And, by "any means necessary" - it is just that. Though his tactics may be brutal and shocking, they usually yield results. Yet, this case was by far one of his most difficult ones. And, it required a partner - Agent Helen Brody (played by Carrie-Anne Moss).

Now, Brody was the exact opposite of 'H'. While 'H' was a very bottom line and harsh individual willing to do what it takes to get the job done, Brody was a very kind and caring person - she thought the way to handle matters like these could be resolved civilly.

But, there was one factor against them - time. They had no time to build rapport and handle this matter through the proper legal channels. If they did not find the location of the bombs, millions of people would die - including them.

This was quite a dilemma. And, it put both 'H' and Agent Brody in a tough spot. They had no choice but to succeed and to do what it takes to reveal the locations of the three bombs.

This film had a lot of shock value - some of the scenes were very realistic. There were a lot of "in your face" type moments. It was truly shocking to see the brutality and interrogation techniques used in an attempt to obtain the information needed.

Though, this film really became a question of right and wrong. What was right? And, what was wrong?

Was it wrong to use harsh interrogation techniques in an attempt to save millions of American lives? Or, was it right?

And, who is to decide what is right and what is wrong? Is it us as human beings? Or, us as Americans? If so, what gives us the right?

I think this movie has a lot of good points - there's a very important message here about what is right and what is wrong and the justifications we give as humans as well as Americans for the acts we commit. It's very interesting to see because it then becomes a matter of perspective.

There's a point in the film where Agent Brody is accusing 'H' that his tactics are wrong only to find that she is only seeing things from one perspective - the lines of right and wrong start to blur and she no longer knows what is right and what is wrong. I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say her perspective starts to change at this turning point in the movie.

As for the reasoning of Yousef's actions and his intent to hurt the American people if his demands are not met, his justification is a very interesting one - he makes a very truthful statement. And, this statement can really be taken to heart - it's very real what he says and almost to the point where we should ask ourselves the question, "What gives us the right?"

Overall, I really enjoyed this film. It had a really good storyline. Both Samuel L. Jackson and Carrie-Anne Moss played very good roles in the film.

(Note: I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say Samuel L. Jackson played another B.M.F. in the movie. As he says in the film, "I'm your worst nightmare").

Apart from the storyline, this movie had a lot of twists and turns. There were a few moments in the film that really caught me off guard - I thought it was going in another direction only to be taken by surprise (especially near the end). From beginning to end, it definitely was worth it.

If you're in the mood for a thriller type of movie, I highly recommend this one.

Movie Preview: Resident Evil: Afterlife

With summer in the air, there's going to be a lot of action type films coming out. I'm really looking forward to seeing this film based on the popular video game.

According to Wikipedia:

"Resident Evil: Afterlife is an upcoming 3D science fiction action horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and starring Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller, Kim Coates, Spencer Locke, Boris Kodjoe and Shawn Roberts. It is the fourth installment in a series of film adaptations based on Capcom's survival horror video game series Resident Evil. It is also the first film in the series to be released in 3D. In the film Alice search and rescue remaining survivors in Los Angeles of the T-virus outbreak, who team up against Albert Wesker, the head of the Umbrella Corporation."

From Paris With Love (2010)

Since I was in the mood to see an action type of film, I decided to check out this film. I'm glad I did - I was not disappointed.

Basically, this film is about a regular guy James Reese (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) whose sole desire is to become a special operation field agent. He is willing to do whatever it takes to make his dream job.

In the beginning, Reese goes through a series of mini missions as part of his initiation into the secret society of special operation field agents. The mini missions seem really easy and miniscule in nature, he is wanting more. And, then his dream comes true - one last mission in order to gain his dream job.

During this last mission, he meets his future partner special agent Charlie Wax (played by John Travolta). Now, Charlie is not your typical guy - he's a B.M.F.

(Note: I won't spell out BMF on this blog. For those who are not familiar with this term, I'll give you a hint. Think Samuel L. Jackson in this film. If still baffled, here's a reference link.

Reese and Wax are definitely a match made in heaven - they are complete opposites. It was definitely entertaining to watch them interact together - there were quite a number of funny and entertaining moments.

(Note: One of my favorite lines by Wax (John Travolta) in the film, "Oh, have you met my wife?" A very entertaining moment!)

Though, Wax shows Reese the reality of being a special field agent - it's not all glitz and glamour. There's a lot more involved than Reese thought. He has to wonder, "Did I sign up for this?"

This film started out a bit slow. Though, there was a turning point in the movie that really got me interested. From there, it was action all the way - it was definitely worth the wait.

(Note: I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say the turning point was a bit predictable. Though, not entirely - there was still an element of mystery that kept me wanting to watch more).

Regarding the action in the film, it was exhilarating. I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride the whole way through - there was definitely a lot of adrenalin in the air.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie very much. The action alone was worth it. As for the ending, I felt it gave a sense of closure - I definitely felt like it was a good, entertaining movie.

If you're in the mood for an action type film, I do recommend this one.

Movie Preview: Predators

With summer in the air, there's going to be a lot of action type films coming out. I'm really looking forward to seeing this film produced by Robert Rodriguez.

According to Wikipedia:

"Predators is an upcoming 2010 science fiction, action and horror film directed by Nimród Antal, and starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo and Derek Mears. The film is a sequel to Predator (1987) and Predator 2 (1990). Producer Robert Rodriguez stated that he named the film "Predators" in relation to how the second film in the Alien franchise was called Aliens.[2] The title Predators is intended to have a double meaning, in that it refers to both the film's alien creatures, as well as the group of humans who are going against them."

The Thirteenth Floor (1999)

Since I was in a sci-fi mood, I decided to check this film out. To say the least, it was definitely an interesting film.

Basically, it's a movie about identity. Sometimes we may think we know who we are only to find out what we thought we knew was all a lie. One day, we wake up from our trance and really see our lives and the world we live in for what it really is.

And, sometimes when we know the truth we don't like what we see. Sometimes we can't handle the truth.

This film makes no exception to that statement. There are some who continue to accept their fate, continue to live and accept the way things are. And, then there are others who refuse to accept what cards are dealt to them - they fight back in an attempt to create the life they want, the life they thought they had - not the life they actually have.

During the beginning of the film, as the audience you think you know the whole story. Everything starts to come together to set the tone and storyline - it seems simple enough.

However, there's a turning point in the movie where things change - this part of the film really baffled my mind. I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say this movie definitely took me for a ride - the twist is the cherry on top that makes this film really mind blowing. (literally!)

(Note: This film is comparable to "The Matrix" in nature - it deals with a lot of the same concepts).

There were a lot of parts in the movie that really kept me guessing - I wanted to see more. And, when I thought I knew what would happen something else would fall into place - it was unpredictable.

Overall, I really enjoyed the film. It had a lot of twists and turns which is a definite plus in my book. And, since I enjoy psychological type of films this one really took me for a mind trip.

If you're in the mood for a sci-fi type of movie, I definitely recommend this one.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

Since I was in the mood for a good action type movie, I decided to check out this film based on the video game after reading Action Flick Chick's review (my fellow Filmgirl Force friend). I was not disappointed.

Going into the film, I had a feeling this one would be good. Rarely do Disney films disappoint me. And, I usually enjoy Jerry Bruckheimer produced films. This one was no exception.

The film had a great story to tell - it was full of twists and turns. I have to admit, there were quite a few unexpected surprises regarding the storyline which I really enjoyed - there were quite a number of unexpected moments.

(Note: For those that saw the film, one of my favorite quotes was "A true king considers the advice of counsel but always follows his heart").

I think Jake Gyllenhaal did a great job in portraying the main character, Dastan (aka The Prince of Persia). Personally, I've always enjoyed watching him on the big screen - I think he's a very talented actor.

Though, I found it interesting that he played such a different role from those that he usually portrays. Usually, I find him to portray the more smart, quiet, reserved type of character such as in this film. So, it was very interesting to see him play the more strong (physically as well as mentally) heroic type of character - he portrayed the role of Dastan quite well.

I also enjoyed the character of Princess Tamina (played by Gemma Arterton). She played a very strong female figure (mentally as well as physically) in the movie. I enjoyed her witful banter with Dastan very much - I think the two were very entertaining to see together on the big screen.

Apart from the story and the acting, what I really enjoyed about the film was the way it really played true to the video game. It felt like a big adventure and there were a lot of cool action scenes and of course, lots of jumping.

Regarding the action scenes, they were staged quite well. In a way, I felt that I was right there in battle - it all seemed like a video game full of strategy and action type scenes. There were some really great action scenes and stunts - it all played out very well to make a good action type movie.

(Note: For the fans of the video game, I think you'll be very pleased with the depiction of the film and how it stayed true to the game itself).

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. The storyline, the acting and the intensity of the acton scenes really made it a good solid film - it was very enjoyable to watch.

If you're in the mood for an action type film with a lot of adventure, I definitely recommend this one.

The Road (2009)

Going into this film based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name, I had heard really good things about it. So, I decided to check it out.

When I first saw the trailer, it really looked more like an action type movie - it looked like another interesting survival type of film. Now that I've seen it, I would say the trailer is very well done and put together - it really captured my attention.

Though, the film itself really was more of a drama type of movie to me. It was a bit slow - it went back and forth between drama type scenes and actions scenes. Though, I would say the majority of the film was in the drama category.

From the trailer, it looks like a linear type of movie - just dealing with the present. However, the film actually goes back and forth from the past to the present and vice versa. I didn't really expect this kind of format from viewing the trailer.

Regarding the action scenes, some of them were quite shocking - I definitely was not prepared for some of them. I don't want to spoil it for you but let's just say some of the scenes were inhumane in nature.

Basically, the story of the film involves the main character, "The Man" (played by Viggo Mortenson) and his son (played by Kodi-Smit McPhee) as they travel in an effort to survive.

(Note: Also, Charlize Theron plays "The Wife" - she plays more of a minor role in the film).

Along the journey, you find out more about the main characters - their past and struggles. And, you also find out how they got into this situation in the first place. Though, the "how" is not described in much detail.

I think this film has a good story - it definitely had its moments. Though, I feel it just wasn't executed well - it could have been done better.

Instead of an action type of film, it ended up being more of a drama type movie. The majority of the film was filled with drama type scenes - there were very few action scenes.

Overall, this film just didn't do it for me - it felt too slow. I think it could have been done better if there were more action type of scenes - it had a good story. Though, the fact that it dragged for me was a bit frustrating - it needed more momentum.

Personally, I can't really recommend this film - it was more frustrating to watch than enjoyable. If you've been contemplating seeing this one, I'd say its best to pass on it.

Movie Preview: Going the Distance

With the summer season nearing, there are a lot of films coming out for the summer.

Thought I'd share this film with you - it caught my eye. I really admire and respect Drew Barrymore - she's a very bright and talented gal. Check it out!

Seven (1995)

Recently, I had the opportunity to see this film - one of my favorite thriller and crime type movies.

What I like about this movie is that it's not your average thriller and crime type of film - it's not just a movie about the crime itself. It's also a movie about the lives of the two detectives involved investigating the crime, Detective Lt. William Somerset (played by Morgan Freeman) and Detective David Mills (played by Brad Pitt).

On one hand, you have Detective Somerset, a very experienced and tenured detective - he's seen it all. He knows what the job can do to one psychologically and the demands of the job. At the beginning of the film, we learn he is set and ready to retire - he no longer desires to continue his role as a detective. It's just been too much for him. And, he's had enough of the fast life.

And, on the other hand we have Detective Mills, a very young and less experienced detective compared to Detective Somerset. Detective Mills is ready to take on the world and stop it from crime. He is willing to sacrifice everything including spending time with his family in the name of doing what's right for the job. It gets to the point where work consumes him. And, he brings it home with him.

We also meet Detective Mills' wife, Tracy Mills (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) who used to be a schoolteacher in the town they used to live before they moved to the big city for Detective Mills' job. She has been trying to cope with the change and the big city. Though, she finds herself unable to understand her husband's passion for his work feeling lost and confused at times.

The homicide case assigned to Detective Somerset and Detective Mills is one that turns out to be more complicated - it simply is not an open and shut case. To some like Detective Somerset, it's the worse kind of case - a serial murder case that can go on for years and years. Though, to others like Detective Mills it's the case of the century - one that may make him famous if he is to catch the killer. And, that is a big "if."

What's interesting about this film is the way each murder is staged and justified by the killer.

(Note: For those who have not seen the film, I won't go into the identity of the killer and his role - I don't want to ruin it for you).

Each murder is justified by the killer as one of the seven deadly sins . They are as follows: gluttony, sloth, pride, greed, lust, envy, and wrath.

With each murder, comes the ultimate completion of the killer's plan - to send a message to the world and be remembered for his work. And, indeed it is something that will be remembered for years and years. Why?

The ending is what made this film interesting - it's such a complete twist and mind trip. As the audience, I felt in the last scene that all is lost for the killer - that there was not much hope for him and his work was completely finished. Though, we soon realize that's not the case at all - he planned it all along and his work was almost done.

(Note: For those who have not seen the movie, I don't want to ruin it for you but let's just say it's very unexpected and one of those moments that can really throw you off).

And, the unexpected ending and twist is what makes this film so brilliant and so well executed. Just as the killer planned things all along, so did the film's storyline - it really gave me the twist that I look for in these kinds of films. And, a film with a twist and unexpected ending is one worth watching in my book.

If you're in the mood for a thriller and crime type of film, I highly recommend this one.

Movie Preview: Get Him to the Greek

When I first saw the trailer for this movie as a preview for the last movie I saw, I just knew I had to see it.

From the trailer alone, it looks very entertaining and funny - it looks like a film that many may be able to relate to and enjoy watching. Also, I especially enjoy watching Jonah Hill on screen - he is very funny.

Robin Hood (2010)

Since I have an interest in history, I was looking forward to seeing this film. Going into it, I had a lot of expectations for it. It surprised me. Though, in a good way.

As a child, I remember reading the "Robin Hood" storybook. I remembered Robin Hood, the heroic figure, as one who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. In turn, I really thought this movie would be the same - I was mistaken.

Instead of focusing on Robin Hood and his goodwill towards the poor (as in the children storybook), we are introduced to a different Robin Hood - this is a man who is good yet does not realize the power of his goodness and ability to help others. This man is one who just wants to survive - his sole purpose is to survive.

In a way, this movie is more of a prequel to the Robin Hood story we all know. Just as "Batman Begins" is about Batman and how he came to be, "Robin Hood" is just the same - it is the story of Robin Hood and how he became to be as well.

It's not until Robin Hood, played by Russell Crowe, stands up and does a good deed for his country (the side he thought was the right side) yet is cast away as an outsider is when he realizes he's playing for the wrong side.

It's not the rich (i.e. the monarchy, the merchants, etc) that he should be defending - it should be the poor. As, it is the rich (in these times) that really are the ones that steal from the poor (in forms of taxation) for their own self-interest. To Robin Hood, this is wrong.

What's interesting is that the story then becomes a matter of ethics - what is right? And, what is wrong? And, who is to say what is right and what is wrong? Is it the rich? Or, is it the poor? Who can decide what is right and what is wrong?

In a way, this is a story of vengeance - a vengeance against the rich for wronging the poor. And, it is this vengeance that gives Robin Hood purpose in life. Before he was wronged, he didn't have much purpose. Though, this event changed him and enlightened him - it gave him a reason to live.

What made it even more personal was the fact that his family was involved. I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say Robin Hood really followed in the footsteps of his family in his mission of vengeance against the rich. In a sense, this new vengeance gave him a purpose which gave him a new identity.

When it boils down to it, this film is really about identity - knowing who you are and remembering where you came from. Sometimes we forget the past and sometimes we want to forget the past. Yet, the past is the past. And, a lot of times the past tells us where we came from.

Though it can be hard, we must always remember where we came from - it is a part of who we are even as we grow up and become adults.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. It had a good storyline, acting was good and the action scenes were pretty well played out. For me personally, I enjoyed the historical references and backdrop of the movie - I do enjoy period pieces.

(Note: I really liked Cate Blanchett's role and portrayal of Lady Marion. She played a very strong character in the film - intelligent and strong willed).

Though, I'm going to be honest. Not everyone is going to like this movie. I've already heard some bad reviews of it already.

Going into it, I think some people had some expectations- namely the story of Robin Hood and how he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. The fact that it was more of a prequel, I think may have turned some people off.

However, I enjoyed it. I was entertained throughout the film. But, it is not for everyone. I think those who will enjoy it are those who have an interest in history and enjoy watching period pieces (like me). If you're not that much of a history buff, you may not enjoy this film as much.

If you're in the mood for a history type of movie and enjoy period pieces, I do recommend this one.

Green Zone (2010)

"What's going on with the INTEL? There's nothing there. The INTEL is no good."

Recently, I had the opportunity to see this film. Let me just say, it's a very powerful film with a very powerful message.

This movie really portrays how easily information can be manipulated and spread to make people believe it as truth. And, this film really is about truth and the trust we place in our government that they will always tell us the truth. At face value, can we really trust what our government tells us and accept it as truth?

In the film, it really shows the consequences that can happen when we accept everything the government says as truth. Failing to question those things as truth even when it does not make sense can really have a negative impact on a country and its people.

In a sense, this movie portrays two types of people - those that accept what is said as truth, and those that question. It is people who question what is said as truth, such as the main character Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (played by Matt Damon), who can really make a difference in our society and our world.

Those who question challenge those who take all things said as fact. Even if these things come from their own government. And, it is those who question who are able to reveal the truth and the true intentions of the government themselves.

Sometimes the truth can be ugly. And, yes - sometimes people cannot handle the truth. But, who is to say the truth should not be revealed? Who is to say we should not know the truth? Our government?

Why do we continue to allow our government to make decisions for us? It is the same question Roy Miller had in the film. Why are we here? Are we all just pawns in a scheme for our own government's self interest?

Is our government so powerful that it thinks it can do anything in the name of self interest alone? Even if it means destroying an entire country and its people.

These are the types of issues that are brought up in the film. And, it is these issues that truly had an effect on me. It showed me the power of governments and the power of influence over its people.

Though, this film was not all about the doom and gloom - it was also about hope. It showed what can happen when people question and play a pro-active role in truly wanting to make a difference in the world.

In the end, it showed how information can be used to tell the truth through technology and the mediums we have today. One of the most important mediums is the Internet.

With the Internet, information can spread like wild fire. No longer are we limited to the traditional forms of media and communication (i.e. television, newspapers, magazines, etc).

Now, we can take control and truly make a difference with the power of the Internet. And, the best thing about it is that we can send our message to the world right at our fingertips. Imagine making a difference in the world with one click of a button.

I must admit, this movie has some pretty heavy issues - it really made me think. It made me think about the world we live in and the types of things that are happening right now as I sit and write this review.

There are other people in the world who do not live in a country like ours. There are other people in the world who may live in a country destroyed and ruined by a country such as ours. It truly gave me something to think about. And, a movie that gives me something to think about is definitely one worth watching in my book.

I'll end this review with the most powerful quote in the movie,

"It's not for you to decide what happens here."

If you're in the mood for an action type movie that makes you think, I definitely recommend this one.

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

Recently, I re-visited this movie. It's one of those films I can watch over and over again - it's very unique and unlike your traditional comedy type movie.

What I really enjoy about this film is that it's relatable on so many levels. There are references to so many things that remind me of my childhood days. From the tetherball game, the rollerblades, the "Glamour Shot" type business by Deb, those small little homemade friendship bracelets, etc. This film is truly a blast from the past.

It's funny because I remember a lot of these things growing up. And, I think weaving this with the issues Napoleon, portrayed by Jon Heder, faces as an adolescent really blends well to make an entertaining movie.

When I first saw this film, I thought this movie was actually set back in the past. However, looking closer into the film and researching it a bit revealed that it actually was set in modern day time.

What the director wanted to portray was that there are actually people out there today living life as if they were in the past. And, I think that is what truly makes this film unique.

This movie makes you think it's set in the past. But, what it's really about and this is the twist is that it's really about people who live in the past. And, this is portrayed by so many characters throughout the movie.

I think the character who portrays it the best is Napoleon's uncle, Uncle Rico (portrayed by Jon Gries) who continues to reminisce about his high school days as a football star. To him, this was the most exciting time of his life. He even went so far as to look into a way to go back - a way to travel back in time to his glory days. If only he could go back.

Though this film portrays those who live in the past, it also has a message - life goes on. We all like to think back about the past and some of the good times we had. Though, time does not stand still. Things change. And, with change people must adapt.

This main theme of change and adapting to change is portrayed very well at the end. The characters end up adapting to change and move forward with their lives. Though life isn't always perfect and what we expect it to be, it's there. And, sometimes we just need to appreciate what we have - not what we don't have.

If you're in the mood for a comedy type movie, I highly recommend this one.

Indie Web Series - The Kin Journey Begins: Who Are Really Our Friends?

Iron Man 2 (2010)

For those who follow my through twitter, you probably know how much I've been really looking forward to this movie - I've been tweeting about it all week. When I first saw the trailer, I knew I definitely wanted to go out and see it - I'm glad I did.

(Note: If you haven't seen the first "Iron Man" film or you've seen it but may need a refresher, I highly recommend seeing it first before you go out and see this movie. There are a few recurring characters and parts of the film that relate to the prior movie).

This film is really a movie about technology and the power of technology. The above quote sums it all. But, technology can go both ways - either for the good or for the bad. And, this is determined by the one who holds it.

On one hand, you have Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) who believes he has achieved his father's, Howard Stark, dream of world peace through Iron Man (aka his alter ego). And, yes for awhile world peace had been achieved.

Though, on the other hand you find Ivan Vanko (played by Mickey Rourke) who has a vengeance for Tony Stark and his family. And, also Justin Hammer (played by Sam Rockwell), Stark's new business rival, a business weapons maker, who only cares about profit and gain no matter what the costs even if it means creating war.

(Note: I won't go into the reason why here as I don't want to spoil it for those who have not seen the film. If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about).

The technology here in question is not only the "Iron Man" suit, which the United States government is trying to seize, but also information. It's the information that is valuable. Why?

Information is a blueprint for what is possible. With information, anything can be achieved through technology. (This is what the quote above is referring to).

However, though information is out there and available there are some things that can be easily achieved by just having the "blueprint," and those that require more thought. Sometimes there is a point where existing information can no longer help and what is needed is vision - imagination to creatively think beyond what is seen by the eye.

(Note: Here, I'm referring to a point in the film where imagination was the key. And, through imagination a new technology was born. If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

In a way, I think this film was making a statement about the kind of world we have today. There are lots and lots of products out there on the market. Anyone can take a product and copy it especially today with the amount of information we have available.

But, it takes skill and imagination to create something truly great and unique - something different. And, that innovation is what sets "the greats" from the "not so greats".

Though I don't really consider myself that much of a comic book type person, I really enjoyed this movie. This is definitely an action type movie - lots of big explosions and special effects. It kept my attention throughout the film.

As for the story, I thought it played true to the character of Iron Man. I especially enjoyed how they incorporated some references to some other comic book type characters.

(Note: If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

I enjoyed seeing both Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson in the movie playing their respective roles.

(Note: I didn't put here the characters they portrayed as I don't want to spoil it for those who have not seen the film. However, I will say I thought Scarlett Johansson was in some really awesome scenes near the end).

Also, I thought it was pretty interesting to see Jon Favreau, who plays Happy Hogan, since he directed the film. He did a great job and his character was very funny at times in the movie.

Apart from the story and the characters, I really enjoyed the level of comedy in the film. Not only did it have a lot of action, but I found myself laughing many times throughout the movie. I especially liked the courtroom scene in the beginning, it was classic!

Overall, I really enjoyed this film. It had it all - action, comedy, insight and most importantly, conflict. (The main ingredient of "My 15 Minute Rule"). Above all, I found it to be very entertaining - it definitely was a very fun movie to watch.

If you're in the mood for an action type film, I highly recommend this one.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009)

When I first read about this movie from my tweep's, @ReelTalker, blog post it sounded really interesting. So, I decided to go ahead and check it out.

This was a really interesting but weird film for me at the same time. It started out very "eerie" and then progressed into more of a detective story. Yet, it wasn't an ordinary detective story only about a case. It was a detective story about the detective himself - the "Bad Lieutenant" (played by Nicholas Cage).

Basically, the movie has two stories - the story about the case and the story about the life of the detective (aka the "Bad Lieutenant").

As the film progresses, it shows the dark side of the detective and his ways of coping with his vices and addictions. And, these addictions turn out to be highly addictive in nature. (If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about).

There are some scenes in the movie that really had shock value - it's like something that just came out of nowhere. As I watched, I was in awe at some of the actions that the detective took. At one point in the film, it got to be really out of hand - almost to the point where the "Bad Lieutenant" becomes psychotic. (I don't want to ruin it for you, but let's just say there's a lot of "madness" that goes on in this film).

To be honest, this movie really felt like a novel. Basically, it portrayed the life of a detective and his ways of coping with his many vices in life. At one point in the film, it almost made me believe that his vices would destroy him. Though, there was a small twist and change in events at the end, which really did surprise me.

Personally, I really wanted to like this film - I think it had a good story. Though, I just feel it wasn't executed very well.

Instead of a movie, this film really felt like a novel - it just kept going on and on portraying each event as a scene. At one point, I wasn't really sure how they would end it - it just felt like it would keep going on. It lacked focus.

As for the ending, it was more "open ended" - I didn't feel like I got a sense of closure. I felt the story had potential. Though, I feel it just wasn't very well executed and put together. It's like they just kind of threw a bunch of bits and pieces together which really didn't bring things together at the end. It just didn't have that punch.

Overall, I think this film had an interesting story to tell. Though, it just didn't do it for me in the execution. If you've been contemplating seeing this movie, I'd say it's best to pass on it.

Indie Film Trailer - 8: The Mormon Proposition

Since it's Indie Movie Monday (#IndieMM), I thought I'd post up this indie film trailer, "8: The Mormon Proposition." (I first found out about this indie film from my tweep @FilmSnobbery (thank you!)
