National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Since I posted my Top 10 Christmas Movies, I thought I'd keep with the holiday spirit and review one of my favorites - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

I saw this film recently and it never gets old. Every time I watch it, it always brings a smile to my face and gets me more into the holiday spirit. It's definitely one of those long lost, family type, holiday films.

Let's face it - the holidays are great but we all know it's also a crazy time of year. It's a time of being with family and loved ones. But, we all know that sometimes being with family can bring about conflict. And, that conflict is brilliantly displayed in this movie. (Maybe that's why it brings people together only at certain times of the year!)

This movie has it all - humor, conflict, drama and of course - those little tiny things that can really add up that can really bring a family together. It shows you what can happen when you put multiple family members under one roof - very different perspectives and personalities. And, believe me the personalities really come out in this movie.

For every personality in the film, there is probably one or more personalities I can relate to. From the neighbors, to the brother/sister, to the in-laws, to the boss, it definitely presents a lot of different personalities that come out when people and family are brought together during Christmas time. I think that's what makes it a great movie - it has something that everyone can relate to.

What I really enjoyed about this film is seeing the little traditions performed as the Christmas holiday approaches. It starts off with the tradition of picking a family Christmas tree - something we can all relate but also very comical. (If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

And, then it progresses with the shopping, the cooking, family visiting, and of course that special thing called a "Christmas bonus" some people look forward to receiving every year. All in all, it's a film everyone can relate to in the spirit of the holiday season.

If you're looking for a good holiday movie to watch, I definitely recommend this one. It's a classic!

Avatar

Lately, I've been really debating whether to see this film or not. (Had many conversations back and forth with my tweep ReelTalker about the film).

After seeing the movie trailer the first time, I still wasn't sure. So, I read a couple reviews - they were mixed. Some people enjoyed the film, while others did not.

Being James Cameron's next big film after Titanic, I was really intrigued. There was a lot of hype about the amount of money and time put into this film. Apart from that, I've heard James Cameron is a really great storyteller.

After much debate, I decided to go ahead and fork out the money to see the film. There is the option of seeing the movie in 3D - I wasn't quite sure which route to take. Though, I decided to go ahead and see it in 3D since the film was made for it. I'm glad I did.

Let me just say, seeing the film in 3D really was an awesome experience. Not just because the film was made for 3D, it was also because the film was a futuristic type movie. Being a film set in the future, watching the film in 3D just gave for a better movie watching experience.

I felt like I was right there in that world the entire time - I felt a part of it. If you plan on seeing the film, I definitely recommend seeing it in 3D.

Speaking of 3D, the special effects and animation were great. In a way, it was a different type of animation - very different from what I've seen before. The characters and animals in the "Avatar" like world were very different and unique. Each character and/or animal had very detailed and unique features. Even the language(s) spoken were very unique in their own way.

Watching the film, it felt like Cameron put a lot of thought and time into this film. It was very aesthetically pleasing to the eye - the scenery and the "Avatar" like world alone is breathtaking. I could tell there's a lot of details in the film to make Cameron's world come to life.

As for the storyline, it was very unique in its own way. Some aspects of it reminded me of this film. (If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about).

The story itself is really about perspective. Throughout the film, you see the situation from different points of view. This is what sets the tone of the film. And, from the different perspectives you learn more and more about why they are there in the first place and each character's purpose for being there.

Though you are presented with different perspectives in the beginning, the main story is told through the main character's, Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington), viewpoint.

However, his perspective begins to change once he puts himself in the shoes of the very beings (aka The Na'vi People) he is sent to seek out (and if need be destroy) in the name of claiming their precious mineral, unobtainium.

The story unfolds as Sully learns the way of The Na'vi People, and learns they are not the ones who are "savages." (aka the term the Humans have given them). He learns of their ways to live simply and preserve nature - their way of life really opens up his eyes.

Though, not everyone sees what Sully sees. And, this is where the conflict begins. There are those who just want to take and claim the precious mineral for their own in the name of greed and power. And, the question then is posed - who are the real savages here?

Overall, I enjoyed the film. I felt entertained for the entire movie. Though, I have to admit - this is not a film for everyone. After seeing it, I can understand why this may be a film for those who are very interested in the "fantasy" and "sci-fi" type genres. It's a good movie, but I can't say it's a great one. Though, I'm glad I went and saw it.

If you're in the mood for a fantasy and/or sci-fi type film, I recommend seeing it (and in 3D). Though, if you don't consider yourself a "fantasy" and/or "sci-fi" type movie goer, I'd say it's a toss up if you want to wait until it comes out on DVD. For me, I'm glad I went and saw it - it's definitely a film that kept me entertained.

Public Enemies

"I'm not here for your money. I'm here for the bank's money."

- Public Enemies

Ok, so I really wanted to see this film when it first came out. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to catch at the theater. So, I had to wait to see it. Now that it's out on DVD, I finally had a chance to see it. It was definitely worth the wait.

Since I enjoy watching gangster movies, I really did enjoy watching this film from beginning to end. Let me just say, it's not for everyone. There are parts in the film that seem to kind of drag but bring a sense of history to the film. (If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about).

There are times when there are some characters introduced and/or discussed in the film that may sound familiar to those who have studied and/or are interested in "gangster" type history. This is why I say - it's not for everyone.

For those who do enjoy historical type movies and have an interest in "gangster" type films, you may find this very interesting and entertaining. I did.

I really enjoyed Johnny Depp's performance of John Dillinger, one of the most notorious gangsters of all time. He really brought life to the character and insight into the gangster world at that time. The quote above sums it all.

It portrayed Dillinger as a man trying to survive - rebelling against large banks who did have the power to take advantage of people's money. Back then, the FDIC had not been fully established yet. So, people had to have faith that the banks would hold their money (in the form of deposits) for them. However, like any other institution that has too much power - it can corrupt.

It portrayed Dillinger as non-violent man. When him and his crew robbed banks, they made it a point not to kill innocent civilians. Very interesting. Though, there was violence with the action sequences between Dillinger's crew and the police. Being wanted by the law, it was very much a game of cat and mouse since Dillinger and his crew were always on the move.

By the end of the film, Dillinger had seemed to change. He wanted a more simpler life, a normal life. I really enjoyed how the director, Michael Mann, showed another side of Dillinger - the side that wanted to get away from the fast life and want simpler things. He no longer wanted the fast money, the fast cars, and the fast women.

Though, getting away from it all wasn't that easy - it was very hard for him to escape the world he once longed for. I don't want to ruin it for you but let's just say the saying, "Be careful what you wish for," can sometimes hold true.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. If you enjoy historical and "gangster" type movies, I definitely recommend this one. Check it out!

(p.s. If you enjoy historical type films, you might also enjoy this movie as well. Happy movie watching!)

Indie Short Film - Daredevil Cleaners

I thought I'd post up this short film by my tweep, King is a Fink. Check it out!

"Daredevil Cleaners is a short film that we made for the Film Racing Grand Prix. We made it in less than 100 hours. We were assigned a theme (evil) and an action (counting money) that we had to incorporate into the film.

Early on in the film race we agreed that we didn’t want to make a moralistic film but rather something more unconventional. We wanted Wade to be deeply conflicted about his inner evilness and to be seeking a way to exorcise his demons. This was more appealing than creating a film where someone who is evil is judged and punished.

Let us know how you think it turned out!"

Law Abiding Citizen

"It's not what you know. It's what you can prove in court. That's how our justice system works."

- Law Abiding Citizen

After seeing the trailer for this movie, I knew it was a film I wanted to see. It seemed like a film that had something to say. And, it did. The above quote sums it all.

This is a film about a man, played by Gerard Butler, who played by the rules. And, when an unexpected event happened in his life - he tried to be reasonable and play fair seeking justice for an unlawful deed. Though, he did not get the justice he was seeking. Instead, the justice system freed a criminal based on an unadmissible piece of evidence - the very proof of the unlawful deed done.

Since the justice system could not help this man, he decided to take the law into his own hands and teach the justice system a lesson. This is a story about what's right and what's wrong. And, the morality that can sometimes be lost in our criminal justice system.

I enjoyed watching this film. This is a story about revenge - plain and simple, not too complicated. It's very much a "cat and mouse" type movie. The main character sets up a series of explosions and traps to teach his attorney, played by Jamie Foxx, the impact the justice system can have on an individual who feels wronged by the system.

This film really had something to say - it made a statement. And, the story was told very well. It kept my attention throughout the movie. There's a mix of powerful dialogue and action sequences. And, through it all I wanted to keep watching more.

As for the ending, it really did surprise me - it had an unexpected twist. I don't want to ruin it for you but let's just say the saying "You get what you wish for" can sometimes hold true.

If you're in the mood for an action type movie, I definitely recommend this one.

Ninja Assassin

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it looked pretty interesting. The notion of growing up and being trained to be a ninja as a kid sounded very intriguing. With all these "assassin" type movies out there, it kind of made me wonder - are these people real?

Let me just warn you about the film - it feels very low budget. From the very beginning, it just felt that way. There is some corny dialogue and some scenes that just makes watching the movie feel like a B movie. (If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

Once I accepted that, it made it easier to watch the film. Going into it, I knew it was not going to be an over the top movie - I didn't have high expectations for it.

Surprisingly, I found myself entertained. All through the film, there is a lot of action and lots of large explosions. The fighting scenes alone were very entertaining to watch.

As for the story line, it was ok. I think it could have been done better and presented well. Though, the concept was very interesting. I just think they could have gone deeper into the story and the background. (If you've seen this film, I think they did a good job of presenting the story well).

Overall, I think this was an ok film to watch. Would I recommend paying to see it? It depends. If you're really in the mood for an action type movie and there's not much else out there you'd like to see, I'd say it's a toss up. If not, I'd recommend waiting till it comes out on DVD.

(Note: For another perspective on the film, check out my tweep's, Action Flick Chick, review).

Lost Highway

"I like to remember things my own way. How I remember them. Not necessarily the way they happened."

- Lost Highway

Based on a friend's recommendation, I decided to check this movie out.

There's just something about David Lynch films that bring a sense of eeriness and mystery to the big screen. Though, some of his films (such as this one) still leave a bit of mystery to the audience, I still re-visit them from time to time.

This film is no exception. It definitely falls in the realm of eeriness and the bizarre. The above quote sums it all.

It's more about a matter of perspective than anything else. What one person sees versus what another sees can be two completely different points of view. (If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

The film starts out kind of slow. (Warning: This is not an action movie. It's more a film about the mind and what the mind sees than anything else. If you're in the mood for an action film, this may not be the the best choice).

It pretty much introduces the characters - shows their daily lives and routines. (I heard a lot of people thought the beginning was kind of boring). There's not much action at the beginning nor through the entire movie. Again, this is a film about the mind (not the body).

As in true David Lynch style, there are some bizarre characters introduced. One such character is first introduced at a party the main characters attend. (If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about). This particular character is a bit spooky - very pale and creepy looking. In fact, he is so pale he almost reminds me of a ghost. Honestly, he does.

There is a point in the first half where something strange happens (as in true David Lynch style) to the main character, Fred, played by Bill Pullman. Then, the story stops. (Yes, right when it was starting to get interesting). And, another story begins.

Ok, you're probably thinking - what in the world? Yes, me too. But, if you've ever seen a David Lynch film you'll know this is to be expected. You'll know that somehow, somewhere the characters and stories introduced somehow intersect and have something in common. Right? Yes. Though, it's may not be quite certain.

As the second story begins, it introduces another character, Pete, played by Balthazar Ghetty. And, somehow there is a connection between Pete and Fred. I don't want to spoil it for you, but let's just say it could be more of a coincidence than anything else. (If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

So, the film progresses and Pete's story begins to unfold. As in the beginning of the film, it again goes into his daily routine and life. And, then it begins to get interesting and bizarre.

Strange things begin to happen as the story progresses. Again, some bizarre characters are introduced that were also in the first part of the story (If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about). And, suddenly there seems to be a connection. Though, it's hard to tell exactly what. Classic David Lynch.

Just as Pete's story begins to unfold and things get interesting (as well as bizarre), then we are taken back to Fred's story. And, we learn of his predicament.

As the audience, we then learn of the connection between both stories. I don't want to spoil it for you but let's just say this is a film that has to do with the mind more than anything else. (Hint: If you've seen this film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

As for the ending, it really left some things unanswered. (I guess this is true of many David Lynch films). As the audience, I really didn't feel like the film had a sense of closure - it just ended.

Though, maybe that is what makes this film a mystery - it's something that makes some people want to try to figure it out and watch it again and again. Though, maybe the film is trying to make a statement - sometimes there are things that remain unanswered.

Since I'm a fan of psychological thriller type films, I can honestly say that I did somewhat enjoy this film. Though the film did not bring a sense of closure and left some things unanswered, it did intrigue me. And, it made me want to watch this film again. Perhaps, I will.

Happy movie watching!

The Orphanage (aka "El Orfanato")

"Believe and you will see."

- The Orphanage

In the spirit of Halloween, I had been building my list of scary movies to watch. I was looking for scary movies, both old and new, seen and never seen.

So, I decided to watch this movie based on a recommendation from my tweep, The Horror Digest (thank you!). I had never heard of this film before and decided to give it a go. I'm glad I did.

Since I'm very much into psychological thriller type films such as my last review, I really did enjoy watching this movie. The above quote sums it all.

Basically, it's a movie about perspective - how we see things and the difference between seeing and believing. And, if you start to believe so much in something then you will slowly begin to see things that some people may not see.

In turn, this becomes reality - your reality. And, what is real to you may not be real to someone else. (If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

I really enjoyed how the film presented the story to tell both the present and the past, and to connect the past with the present. Though the story went back and forth (present to past and vice versa), I did not feel confused - it had a unique way of telling the story. I also enjoyed the use of older objects and places to unveil past events - this worked very well in the film.

In addition, I also enjoyed the use of sound effects and images. Most of the film took place in the house (aka the orphanage) - there were many creepy sounds within the home being a very old home and all.

As with a lot of older homes, there can be many sounds within the home to make it spooky such as creaky stairs, older plumbing pipes, etc. This was the effect and experience I had watching this film - the whole house felt creepy.

There were a few twists and turns, which I really enjoyed. The film really kept my attention -I wanted to see more. And, the ending is definitely worth the wait. I don't want to spoil it for you but let's just say the film really makes a statement about the power of believing. And, how the power of believing can make things a reality.

If you're in the mood for a psychological thriller type horror movie, I definitely recommend this one.

(Note: For another perspective on the movie, check out my tweep's, The Horror Digest, review).

(p.s. By the way, the entire film is originally in Spanish with English subtitles).

Happy movie watching!

Silent Hill

"Mother is God in the eyes of a child."

-Silent Hill

In the spirit of Halloween, I've been in the mood lately for scary movies. So, I decided to re-visit one of my favorites based on the video game. (By the way, I'm a big fan of the video game. I've played Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4. Now, I'm currently on this one).

When it comes to horror type movies, I enjoy psychological thriller type films that have more to do with the mind - less blood and gore.

As a fan of the game, I really enjoyed watching this movie. The above quote sums it up quite nicely. It's basically about a mother caring for her child. And, the journey that leads them to the eerie place called Silent Hill.

If you've ever played the game, you'll be able to relate a lot to the film. I really enjoyed watching the different scene changes between daylight and night fall thus turning into what is called "nightmare mode." The whole beauty of the series is the psychological factor and questioning - Is what I'm seeing real? Or, is it all in my head?

I don't want to go into too much detail about the movie as I wouldn't want to spoil it for you. Though, I can say it's one of those movies that just needs to be seen rather than heard.

Honestly, I didn't have really high expectations for the film the first time I saw it. Since I'm a fan of the video game, that was a major part of my decision to go ahead and see it. Now, I'm glad I did.

It's probably one of the few films out there based on a video game that is actually good (in my opinion). I've seen other movies based on video games and I've been mostly disappointed. But, not with this one. It was really an enjoyable film from beginning to end.

It had a good story line and it captured my attention during the entire movie. Plus, the special effects along with the music and sound effects were great. Along with the scene changes, I really enjoyed the whole tone and feel of the movie. I was not disappointed.

As for the ending, it really played true to the eerieness of the film as well as the video game. I don't want to spoil it for you but let's just say it really brought together the real world with the imaginary world. And, this brought about a very spooky feeling.

If you're in the mood for a horror type (psychological thriller type) movie, I definitely recommend this one.

(Note: For another perspective on the movie, check out my tweep's, Action Flick Chick, review).

Zombieland

"You can't trust anyone. The first time I let a girl in my life and she tries to eat me."

- Zombieland

Ok, I have to admit - I don't consider myself much of a zombie fan. Though, I will see a zombie flick from time to time when the mood strikes me. With Halloween coming, I thought it would be a perfect time to go out and see this movie.

Since I heard a lot of good reviews about the film, I decided to check it out. I'm definitely glad I did!

The quote above sets the tone for the entire movie - it's a little bit of horror meshed in with comedy. It does have a lot of action and kept my attention. It's very unique in it's own sense. When I see zombie flicks, I automatically think it's only going to be scary. This was not the case with this film.

Watching this movie is like being on a roller coaster ride - it has its ups and downs, its twists and turns. There are a a lot of funny moments mixed in with traditional horror scenes. I especially enjoy the part that involves Bill Murray - I felt very nostalgic seeing him on the screen again. (If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about).

Apart from the comedy and the horror, it also had a message. It made me think and appreciate the little things in life. It also challenged the audience to think that If you've lost everything and have nothing to lose, what else is there? It definitely conveys a sense of courage to get its message across about standing up to your fears no matter how scary they might be.

Speaking of "fears," let's talk about the zombies themselves. These zombies weren't the stereotypical type, like the ones in this movie. These zombies were not slow at all - they were fast, extremely fast. They could run. And, they had teeth - very sharp ones. Plus, they could really bite!

Coincidentally, I saw Night of The Living Dead (NOTLD) again before seeing this movie. The zombies in NOTLD were not even as fast or as close to the zombies portrayed in this film. Watching NOTLD and not being much of a zombie fan, I thought all zombies were all the same - kind of slow and not as violent. Though, it definitely was not the case in Zombieland.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. The comedy mixed with zombie horror produced an entertaining kind of movie with a sense of humor and style.

Speaking of style, I really enjoyed the special effects (especially the slow motion) in the beginning of the film and through out. Plus, it made me nostalgic seeing Bill Murray on the screen along with seeing childhood treats such as Twinkies and Sno Balls. (If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. Hmmm, maybe another reason to go out and see it!)

If you're in the mood for a horror type film that can make you laugh, I recommend checking this out!

Paranormal Activity

With Halloween coming up, I decided to get in the "spirit" of things and go see this movie.

I have to admit, when I first saw the trailer I thought this movie would be about aliens - I was wrong. I don't want to spoil it for you, but it's more about the "paranormal" in the realm of films such as this one. Enough said.

This is definitely a documentary style type of film. It reminds me of the style of The Blair Witch Project - same concept and style. Though, just in a different setting. The entire movie takes place in one location - a house. Not a haunted house, but an ordinary house. What attracts the paranormal is not the home itself, but the inhabitants of the home.

If you plan to see this movie, I have to warn you - it's very slow. It's definitely not a big budget type of movie - not much action and no music whatsoever. However, if you enjoyed Blair Witch you might just enjoy this one as well.

The beginning sets the tone for the entire film. To me, it seems more like reality tv - you get to know the main characters and exactly what they are experiencing. Through their experiences, the story unfolds and builds up slowly - this is not an action movie.

Throughout the movie, you are given bits and pieces of the story. I really liked the way sound and lighting were used to set the tone and communicate feelings to the audience. And, little by little the "paranormal" makes an appearance. But, not in the way you expect. I don't want to ruin it for you but let's just say it asks the question "Is my mind playing tricks on me?"

To me, this is a movie you watch with a group of friends. It definitely has it's moments. In the beginning and up to the middle, it really had some comedic moments. I found myself (along with the people in the theater) laughing at some parts and commenting. Some parts in the beginning seemed scary to the main characters but not to the audience - it had more of a comedic effect. Let's just leave it at that.

However, towards the end it does get more serious and more scary. Since I saw this in the theater, I am glad I did. If I had watched this at home, it might have been more scarier for me since the film does take place in a home. (If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about).

Was this a scary movie? Yes. Though, it it did not get scary until the end. To be honest, I don't recommend seeing this alone - it's more a movie to see in a group. And, if you get scared easily and it's hard for you to sleep after watching scary movies you might not want to see this at night. Let's just say the scary moments still were in my mind after seeing the film. And, I saw this late at night too!

I'd say this is a movie just in time for Halloween and for those who would like to get into the "spirit" of things. It's definitely low budget and not over the top spectacular. But, it's one of those films that does have an effect.

If you're in the mood for a horror type movie, you might just want to check this out!

(Note: Since the film resembles the documentary style of Blair Witch, the camera shakes a lot throughout the film. Personally, I was able to adjust to it though for some people it does make them dizzy).

Happy movie watching!

Short Film - Lemonheads

Since I've been feeling nostalgic lately for one of my favorite candies as a kid, Lemonheads, (along with my tweep, Kelly, who also likes them too), I thought I'd post up this short film about this classic candy. Check it out!

"A short story/animation of my personal favorite candy, lemonheads. This was a spot done for my Cine for Commercials class".

(p.s. If you have a project(s) you'd like me to check out (i.e. fan trailer, short, spoof, animation, etc), feel free to contact me. I'm always on the lookout for fresh stuff from emerging filmmakers!)

Julie and Julia

Ok, I have to admit - I've been wanting to see this movie for awhile. Though, I was advised not to see it by some who told me it's a pretty predictable movie. I mean, I guess it's the story of the girl turned blogger turned writer who eventually got a book deal. So, what else could there be right? Not exactly.

To me, it wasn't about knowing what was going to happen. Yes, I do admit that most of us bloggers have heard the story of Julie Powell. Though, I still wanted to see it. And, I'm glad I did. It was very entertaining from beginning to end.

Basically, the story was about two people - Julie Powell, the government employee turned blogger and eventually writer, and Julia Child, the famous American chef. Now, Julie was very unsatisfied with life and how her career turned out (I'm sure a lot of people can relate) and wanted more in life.

On the side, she knew she liked to write as she had currently been writing a novel on the side. Though, reality hit and she found herself in a government job she didn't like very much and needed a way to cope.

So, she decided she wanted to learn how to cook specifically French cuisine from Julia Child's book, and write about her experience in her blog titled "The Julie/Julia Project." She set a deadline for herself: 365 days, 524 recipes.

Throughout the movie, we learn of Julie's experience cooking and learning the recipes while at the same time attempting to maintain her full time job, keep up with her friends, and sustain her marriage. Though, she found herself always looking forward to the end of the day where she would attempt a new recipe and then write about it in her blog.

Slowly but surely, Julie began to have a following of dedicated readers who read her blog. At first, only a few people including her mother read her blog. One of my favorite parts of the movie was where she received her first comment (something I think every blogger can relate to). The anticipation and energy when beginning a blog and starting to have readership can definitely be a thrill for a lot of bloggers.

With the other story, we follow the life of Julia Child as she begins her quest as an American chef in France. It was very interesting to watch the humble beginnings of this great chef and how she grew professionally. I really enjoyed watching Meryl Streep, she did a fabulous job and gave me a good laugh - great performance!

As the story progresses, we find out more about Julia Child's personal life and the struggles she faced. I guess, at the time there was a lack of information out there about French cuisine written in the English language. Also, the industry was dominated by male chefs so it was interesting to see how she dealt with her male classmates while attending the famous Le Cordon Bleu University.

Both the stories of Julie and Julia were very interesting to watch. So, you might be asking yourself what do these two stories have in common except for the fact that Julie had been learning how to cook recipes from Julia's book?

To me, it's more of a story about having a dream, wanting to do something meaningful in life and sharing it with the world. Anyone who has ever had a dream can definitely relate to this movie. There are a lot of "naysayers" out there who may always say it's better to be practical than to dream and have your head in the clouds. But, this movie really showed that anything can be possible despite what others say. And, I think that's something that is somehow lost along the way as we reach adulthood.

Both Julie and Julia shared their dreams with the world. Julie wrote about her experience cooking in her blog, while Julia wrote a cookbook and had a television show to share her dream of cooking. Both wanted others to share in their dreams and experience what they've experienced. They both truly reached out to the world sharing their dreams with anyone willing to listen.

For all the dreamers out there, I think the message in this film is that it's never too late. Anything is possible. Anything. Yes, there will be obstacles that can get in the way. But, if you keep at it despite the odds you will eventually get there. And, if you need support and help along the way there will always be someone there listening.

If you're in the mood for a "feel good" type movie, I definitely recommend this one!

(Note: For another perspective on the movie, check out my tweep's, Clarabela, review).

(p.s. Many people have asked about the book vs. the movie. I did pick up the book before watching the movie, it did have more swear words in the book. Some people were turned off by the book but enjoyed the movie. I think Amy Adams really made Julie Powell's character more likeable. If you're interested in reading more, here is an interesting article with a discussion (see the comments).

There Will Be Blood (2007)

I first found out about this movie while reading this book.

While reading the synopsis, it really sounded like something I'd be interested in. (I think I've mentioned here before how I enjoy watching movies where I learn about business).

This film happens to take place at the beginning of the century, a time where opportunities were plentiful and some of the wealthiest families today made their millions (who are now worth billions). It truly was an exciting time in American history.

Basically, this movie focuses on oil men and their quest to find oil and strike it rich. (Sounds similar to the gold rush too!) And, this is the time where Standard Oil is the big kahuna when it comes to oil and has already been well established.

Though, there are still some parts of America at the time that have been untapped - mainly in the West. And, this is where the oil men seek opportunities and begin looking for their pot of gold. (aka oil)

It was very interesting to watch this movie and see how the oil business worked back then. Basically, the oil men would find a piece of land they thought had some oil (based on sample testing) and would offer to lease the land from the landowners (usually farmers) for a small fee. In addition, the oil men would offer the landowners a royalty fee (or percentage) of the profits if they found any oil on their land.

Most of these landowners were farmers who lived very simple lives. And, they did not have the equipment or the manpower to drill for oil. The money the oil men would offer them seemed to good too pass up. In reality, the oil men would offer a really small fee compared to the profits they would actually be making off of the oil. The main character, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, said in one scene he was making $5,000 per week as an oil man with his operation. That's a lot of money, even today!

However, drilling for oil is a very dangerous job - many lives were at stake (thus the name of the movie). So, it was the oil men who were taking the risk. The landowners simply allowed them to use their land. So, in a way it was a win/win situation for everyone.

The film did go into the pros and cons of the oil business and in running a business in general. It was very interesting to watch. There were some moments of the film where unexpected things happened - its all a part of the kind of life we choose.

I really enjoyed the movie. Though, I have to warn you - it's not for everyone. It's more of a history piece than anything else. In my opinion, I think you need to be interested in history to enjoy the film. It is quite long (over 2.5 hours), though it takes you through the history and evolution of the time period which I really enjoyed.

If you're in the mood for a history type film and have an interest in business, I recommend checking this one out!

Happy movie watching!

Piece of Cake

I thought I'd post up this short film found by my tweep, Flash Your Shorts (thank you!). Here's some info:

"A tribute to John Woo. A sizzling summer blockbuster exploding with high energy action!"

It's very interesting to watch this short. I find it comical and very funny how some action shots are done very well here, I've seen the same shots and/or scenes done in many movies we have today. Are there any action shots that look familiar to you? Which movies are they from?

For all the John Woo and action film fans, this one's for you - check it out!

Surrogates

I have to admit, I wasn't really planning to watch this film. I didn't even know what it was about, I never even saw the trailer. Though, it was more of a spur of the moment kind of thing - I was out voted by present company but decided to give it a try.

(Note: Usually, I recommend checking out the movie trailer and reading the reviews beforehand. However, I have gone and seen movies without knowing anything about them, without reading the reviews, and/or without seeing the trailer. And, I've had both good and bad experiences. Though, I always have a story to tell with the films I see on a "whim" - it's the experience of seeing something unknown despite the outcome. And, having these experiences is what makes life interesting).

Basically, the movie is about humans living the kind of lives they've always wanted through robots (aka "surrogates'). And, these "surrogates" are the ones that go out in the world and live life while the humans (aka "the operators") stay home with their brains connected to computers to control their individual "surrogate."

Almost every human has their own "surrogate." And, their "surrogate" is physically configured to look like however they want to be perceived. The surrogates do not necessarily have to look like their operator. For example, you can have a male operator with a female looking surrogate (scary thought!). Basically, the physical appearance of the surrogates lie in the hands of their operator(s).

I found the whole concept of the film very interesting. Surprisingly, the themes of the film closely resemble some of the issues we face today with the evolution of technology and the Internet. We are told the Internet is here to help us connect and communicate better with the world. In a way, that's true. However, in another way it also secludes us from the world by limiting our physical interaction with others.

Some people say that spending too much time at the computer and the Internet is unhealthy because it inhibits our communication skills and our true nature to physically interact with others. More and more we are spending a great amount of time on the Internet, and I wonder if this will contribute to a lack of verbal skills and inability to interact with others in social, face to face settings? I wonder.

With the Internet, we are free to be anonymous if we choose. And, this freedom of anonymity allows others the opportunity to become whatever they like and to be perceived however they would like due to the physical barrier the Internet provides. On the other hand, the Internet allows us to communicate with many people, some we may not have been able to reach before. The Internet truly levels the playing field of human communication. Though, at what price?

The film addresses these issues and asks the ever so lasting question, "What makes us human?" It truly opened up my eyes and made me think, "With all the changes in technology, what is in store for the human race in the future?" With the evolution of technology, when is enough, enough? And, why do we always keep wanting more? These questions are what makes humans, human and eventually why sometimes wanting too much may not be the answer.

Overall, I found the movie to be more than ok but not great. It's definitely a film that makes you think about the future and where we are headed. It does have a lot of action and kept my attention. Though, I think the story could have been better written.

At times, there were some parts that were a bit confusing especially since the film involved a lot of different characters. Also, the "special effects" were a bit comical (if you've seen the film, you'll know what I mean). Though, they tied it up in the end - it didn't have a strong ending but it did have its twists and turns resulting in an unexpected ending.

If you're in the mood for a sci-fi type movie, this one is a toss up - it's something you can see it at the theater or wait for it to come out on DVD. Either way, I think it's one of those films that's better than average but not over the top spectacular. Though, it does raise some interesting questions - it challenged me to think and question where our world is headed.

Inglourious Basterds

Since the last movie I went to go see was a romantic comedy, I decided to stay in the comedy genre but switch gears a bit and see this movie. Let me tell you - it wasn't at all what I expected.

When I first saw the trailer, I thought this was going to be a typical "shoot em up" type movie. Going into the film, I expected Brad Pitt to lead his small army of "Inglourious Basterds" to victory by finding and hunting down their prey. (In this case, the Nazis. By the way, I love how he pronounces the word "Nazis" in the film). Boy, was I ever wrong.

To my surprise, this turned out to be more than a "shoot em up" and kill them type movie. Sure, there were those parts (very bloody and violent) but it wasn't the entire movie.

It had a story, a good story. And, a very interesting way of storytelling. But, then again this is Quentin Tarantino - his films are interesting and unique. I should have know this.

From the opening scene, I could tell this was going to be a good movie. Yes, there's a lot of dialogue (especially in the opening scene) but the dialogue has a purpose. And, dialogue with purpose help tell the story. (Now, dialogue with no purpose really does not contribute to telling a story at all).

What I enjoyed about this movie was Tarantino's ability to tell a story in a unique way. Similar to Kill Bill, the film is divided into chapters (like a book) and each chapter contributes to make up the pieces of the puzzle (aka the story). In a way, there was a sense of mystery and it kept me guessing throughout the movie - it definitely kept my attention. I wanted more.

In addition, Tarantino was able to take a serious subject by adding humor and being witty at the same time. The man is brilliant. His writing exemplifies true wittiness. And, wit is a very valuable skill to have.

Apart from the story and excellent storytelling presentation, I also liked a few other things. In terms of setting the time period, I noticed the film is very detailed oriented. From the wardrobe to the props to the location settings (set designs), I definitely had a sense of the time period. Also, since this was set in Europe I respect the fact that both French and German languages were also used respectively.

Other things I liked were the different angle shots - it really helped add perspective to the story. (On a side note, I also enjoy Robert Rodriguez' work, Tarantino's buddy, who also uses really good and unique angle shots in his films). Probably the best part of the movie (apart from the story), was the audio. The sounds used and the music were superb - they really added to the story and invoked emotion. And, a film able to evoke emotion is one worth watching.

All in all, I really enjoyed this movie. It wasn't at all what I expected. But, in a good way. I don't want to spoil it for you but let's just say the saying, "That's entertainment!" hold true.

If you're in the mood for a comedy type movie, I highly recommend this one! It's definitely worth the money.

The Neverending Story

"People lose their hope and forget their dreams. People with no hope are easy to control. And those who have the control, have the power."

Gmork
The Neverending Story

I recently watched this film based on the novel. Seeing this film, takes me back to my childhood. Growing up, this was one of my favorite movies.

What I enjoyed about this movie as a kid, I still enjoy as an adult - adventure and imagination. The ability to create and imagine is something I really miss from my childhood days. Thus, the reason for this blog. (See my first post).

As I watched this movie as an adult, I could sense an underlying message. The quote above from Gmork says it all. I think the film is trying to make a statement that as we grow up, we lose our sense of imagination and creativity.

In the first scene, the dad of the main character, Bastian, tells him he needs to get his head out of the clouds and start taking responsibility. His father was upset that his teacher called stating that he was caught drawing unicorns in class and had failed to turn in his homework.

So, we can already see that at an early age Bastian is deterred from using his creativity and imagination. I had a similar childhood experience as well. And, growing up I find that I was also taught to take up more responsibility and be more practical.

Throughout the story, the film tests the main characters', Bastian and Atreyu, faith and belief. There are times when things seem hopeless. Though, the story goes on which shows that persistence and belief is the key. This ties in with the theme of hope and belief - believing in yourself and your dreams. And, I think the film gets this underlying point across very well throughout the story.

What I also find interesting is the symbolism and terms used in the film. For example, the world of Fantasia is an imaginary world where anything can happen. And, as a moviegoer you learn that Fantasia has no boundaries - it's limitless. This message symbolizes our imagination and ability to create anything we want. Our creativity has no barriers - the sky is the limit.

The Nothingness (the cause of the collapse of Fantasia) was also a great symbolic message. To me, the Nothingness symbolized the idea of the real world destroying the imaginary world (i.e. being practical and sensible versus being creative and imaginative). It truly was an eye opener to see that there was only one small grain of sand left of Fantasia at the end. To me, this symbolized the lack of imagination and creativity we tend to lose as we grow up to be adults.

Though, I did enjoy the film ending on a positive note of hope. Hope that we could build up the fantasy world again and exercise our ability to create and imagine. And, that ability is why we still have great stories told today.

If you're in the mood for a fantasy type movie, I definitely recommend this one!

Happy movie watching!

(p.s. Just in case anyone is wondering, the name Bastian gave to The Childlike Empress was "Moon Child" (I looked it up). It's hard to believe that was his mother's name. Go figure!)

The Proposal

Since I was in the mood for a comedy, I decided to give this movie a shot and check it out. Plus, I was stuck on a plane and again it looked like most of the movies they offered, I had already seen! (surprise, surprise!)

It started out a bit slow, though it had its entertaining moments. I really enjoy watching both Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds on the big screen - I think they are pretty entertaining to watch.

As for the story, I thought it was a bit unrealistic. Then again, we do go to the cinema to get away from the realities of day to day life and in the end, it is all about being entertained.

During one point in the movie, another girl (played by Malin Akerman) was introduced into the story (an ex of Ryan Reynold's character). Here I thought the story may take a turn and go in a different direction, it could have made the story more interesting and more believable.

But, it went into a more "predictable" direction. Though, I felt it was a bit "unrealistic." I don't want to spoil it for you, but let's just beg the question "Does love happen over night?" Maybe, maybe not. To me, it all happened way too fast.

Though, this film had its moments. There were bits of entertaining parts in the movie that made up for the lack of realism in the story. I especially liked the part of Ramone, (Oscar Nunez) who plays Oscar in the television show "The Office." He was very entertaining to watch here. I also enjoyed the part of Grandma Annie (Gammy) played by prior "Golden Girl" Betty White.

All in all, I think this was an ok movie. It wasn't great. To me, it's not really a movie you need to go run out and see. Honestly, it's probably best left in the NetFlix queue for those times when your choices are kind of limited and when you're in the mood for a romantic comedy type movie

Happy movie watching!

The Soloist

Ok, so I heard a lot of good things about this movie and decided to give it a try. Let me just say, this is a very, very serious film. I guess that's why it's classified as a drama. Very serious.

Both Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. played excellent roles in this film. They were very believable and played true (in my opinion) to their assigned character in the story. The performances alone of both actors is worth watching.

As far as the story goes, this movie is definitely for anyone out there who has had a dream and/or has known someone who has had a dream where things have not gone as planned. It's truly inspiring to see Robert Downey Jr's character, Steve Lopez, attempt to help Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), a very talented musician who so happens to be living homeless on the streets as a result of mental illness.

What I like about the story is that it's not predictable - it does not end the way you think it will. While watching this film, I thought the story would basically go in a linear direction - very one sided. To my surprise, it did not. Though, it did end on a positive note inspiring hope to the audience.

It made me think about how many talented people out there can be in the same situation. It sort of reminds me of the movie "With Honors," and Joe Pesci's character, Simon Wilder, who was also homeless but smart and talented as well.

Overall, I thought the performances of Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx made this a worthwhile movie to watch. Also, it made for a unique story with moments of conflict and drama.

Though, it is a very serious movie. I'd only recommend this film if you're in the mood for a really serious, drama type movie.

Happy movie watching!

(500) Days of Summer

"This is not a love story. This is a story about love."

- (500) Days of Summer

I had heard lots of great reviews about this movie, so I decided to give it a go. The quote above says it all.

Right at the beginning, the opening credits of the film definitely sets the tone for what's to come. (If you've already seen it, you probably know what I'm talking about).

Before I go on, I just feel I have to warn you. If you've seen the trailer, most of the first half of the movie has already been revealed. So, going into it I had anticipated those parts and the jokes already. Sometimes when too much is revealed in the trailer, it can hinder those classic moments if you had not seen it especially if those moments are comedic in nature.

As far as the story goes, it's definitely not the typical love story. It's a tale of boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Girl starts to like boy. Girl and boy slowly work towards becoming a couple through a series of dates and courtships. Boy loses girl and tries to get her back. And, usually in most typical movies - boy usually gets girl back. Then again, this is not the typical love story.

At the very beginning, Summer (Zooey Deschanel) tells Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) that she is not looking for a relationship. We soon find out that she is a product of a broken home, her parents divorced when she was very young. She is used to being on her own and it's hard for her to really let anyone into her life beyond what they see.

So, going into it I thought she may have commitment issues. Then, they start to date and get to know each other better. And, at one point of the movie - it seems that Summer does let Tom in. That's how deep their relationship seemed to me.

Though, the film takes a turn - things start to fall apart. Misery, resentment, and anger set in. The film goes back and forth (between past and present) to compare the early and later stages of the relationship. It kind of had a Memento style of storytelling, though it was not linear since it went fowards and backwards in time.

The film is really a case of perspective - we see the story through Tom's eyes. We see what he sees. Or, I should say - what he wants to see. I don't want to ruin it for you but let's just say the saying, "We only see what we want to see," holds true.

Sometimes the line between reality and fantasy can be blurred especially when emotions are in play. And, in this film - it's Tom's emotions.

As for the story, I felt there were some parts that were left unanswered. Some of these parts were questioned in the movie even by Tom, though never really answered quite fully. I don't know if it was the director's intent in order to get across the message about life and how things just happen. Though, as a moviegoer I wanted to know more.

To me, the movie had it's moments - good times and bad times. Though, there were some parts that were slow and dragged a bit. It was enjoyable to see the courting of Tom and Summer together at the beginning stages of their relationship, it kind of takes you back to the silly and goofy things you do with that special person when things are good.

Overall, I felt the film was ok. I was entertained at parts, but I just felt some parts were still left unanswered. Though, maybe that was something the film was trying to get across - that maybe some things just remain a mystery. And, that mystery is part of what we call life.

If you're in the mood for a romantic comedy, I'd say this film is something you may want to check out. In my opinion, it's not something you absolutely must go run out and see. If it's a question of spending the money, it can be saved until it comes out on DVD. Though I know some may differ in opinion, just my thoughts.

(Note: For another perspective on the film, check out my tweep's, Clarabela, review).

Happy movie watching!

(p.s. I did enjoy the music in the film, there are some pretty cool and catchy tunes!)
